A woman taken in adultery, she must wear the letter A on her chest for all to see, yet she surrounds it with beautiful stitching, so that it advertises not only her shame, but a
3、lso her skill as a seamstress. She refuses to name her lover, the Reverend Mr. Arthur Dimmesdale; keeps her word not to reveal the identity of her husband, now calling himself Roger Chillingworth; and raises her daughter, Pearl, on her own, living at the edge of town, near the wild forest and the op
4、en sea.If some people ask me why I choose the book to write an Impression ,I think that the reason is that I like novel and I like touching novel .There are many plots attract me a lot ,and it tells the story of Hester Prynne, who conceives a daughter through an adulterous affair and struggles to cr

Brief Introduction of Nathaniel HawthorneI appreciate the author of The Scarlet Letter,Nathaniel Hawthorne ,who was an American novelist and short story writer. His first work, a novel titled Fanshawe.Much of Hawthor
6、nes writing centers on New England, many works featuring moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic movement and, more specifically, Dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have mo
7、ral messages and deep psychological complexity. His published works include novels, short stories, and a biography of his friend Franklin Pierce. Concerning the background of The Scarlet Letter, after finding the New World, people who were persecuted by European religion have escaped to America, and
8、 hope to open up a new world without persecution.However ,people at that time did not avoid getting the rid of the religious doctrines .2.PlotIn this novel, the mainline seems to be around the letter A. Hester is brave enough to face the cruel reality. She is always with a mind of courage. She has b
9、een alone with her child for so long , with litter communication. Shame! Hopelessness! Loneliness! Hester has to wear the letter A day after day, seven years as for punishment and ill fame.When a woman has lived through a difficult experience, her character changes a great deal. If she be all tender
10、ness, she will die. If she survive, the tenderness will leave her .Hesters charitable deeds and quiet humility have earned her a reprieve from the scorn of the community. The letter on her chest represents her work on earth , always helping others, without expecting any thanks. Never afterwards, doe
11、s that scarlet letter leave her chest. The townspeople no longer view the letter as a punishment , but rather as representing her great strength and bravery and thy say it means “Able”.But Arthur Dimmesdale, his sin against Hester and Pearl is that he will not acknowledge them as his wife and daught
12、er in the daylight. He keeps his dreadful secret from all those under his care in the church for seven years for fear that he will lose their love and will not be forgiven. He is too weak to admit his sins. He suffers from mysterious heart trouble, seemingly caused by psychological distress. Whats w
13、orse, he is an advisor to the townspeople about their sins. After Mr. Dimmesdales death , no one changes more in appearance than Roger Chilling worth. All his strength and energy has been used to harm his patient . This unhappy man has made his aim in life to add to the suffering of the young minist
14、er. When the evil old man no longer has such a purpose, the devil takes him back to the hell . It is a curious subject of observation, however, whether hatred or love are not of the same place. Each takes a great deal of emotion from one person. The two feelings seem basically the same, expect that
15、one is smiled upon by God, while the other is worshipped by the devil. The two lovers has ever decided to flee to Europe, where they can live with their dauthter Pearl as a family .They feel a sense of release there. However, their plan fails When Hester dies, she is buried next to Dimmesdale. The t
16、wo share a single tombstone, with a deep colored letter A shining brightly.3.Character AnalysisThe Scarlet Letter as the Hawthornes masterpiece is a world-known tragic novel. It shows different characters vividly through delicate description and profound psychological analysis.HesterHester is portra
17、yed as an intelligent, capable, woman. She speculates on human nature, social organization, and larger moral questions. Hesters tribulations also lead her to be stoic and a freethinker.She cares for the poor and brings them food and clothing. Arthur Dimmesdale Among the four main characters Arthur D
18、immesdale has the richest and most complex inner world under Hawthornes writing. His tragic life reflects the basic mood of the novel in no slight degree. This article will give you a detailed analysis about Dimmerdales tragic life, as well as his characters. Dimmesdale was a scholar. He is probably
19、 somewhat aloof, the kind of man who would not have much natural sympathy for ordinary men and women. However, Dimmesdale has an unusually active conscience. The fact that Hester takes all of the blame for their shared sin goads his conscience, and his resultant mental anguish and physical weakness
20、open up his mind and allow him to empathize with others. The personal guilt drives Dimmesdale to further internalize his guilt and self-punishment and leads to still more deterioration in his physical and spiritual condition. Roger ChillingworthRoger Chillingworth,as his name suggests, Roger Chillin
21、gworth is a man deficient in human warmth. His twisted, stooped, deformed shoulders mirror his distorted soul. Ultimately, Chillingworth represents true evil. He is interested in revenge, not justice, and he seeks the deliberate destruction of others rather than a redress (纠正)of wrongs. His desire t
22、o hurt others stands in contrast to Hester and Dimmesdales sin, which had love, not hate, as its intent. PearlHesters daughter, Pearl, functions primarily as a symbol. Her real importance lies in her ability to provoke the adult characters in the book. Pearl makes us constantly aware of her mothers
23、scarlet letter and of the society that produced it. From an early age, she fixates on the emblem. Pearls innocent, or perhaps intuitive, comments about the letter raise crucial questions about its meaning. Similarly, she inquires about the relationships between those around her. ment: This novel wro
24、te about the tragic life of the heroine Hester and it also disclose that people were still fettered by the religious doctrines in the 19th century of Europe .It is a full-length novel of Hawthorne ,a romantic writer of the United States of America in the 19th century.The theme of the novel is the co
25、lonial times two hundred years ago.It expose the cruelty of Social statute ,the deception of religious and the hypocrisy of moral in 19th century. As its title suggests, the book is about labeling, so the scarlet letter “A” stands for adultery ,ability ,angle,ambiguity,and so on . I wonder whether t
26、he state or society has any right to impose law in private matters between citizens. Does adultery really have no impact upon the lives of others? If not, it should not be seen as a crime against the village. A more charitable reading of the Bible would come later in reflections on the New Testament
27、 interpretation of adultery law, namely, that the public need not step in to punish a crime when we ourselves have our own sins to be judged. Each person suffers enough already for his or her own sins.Conclusion: I think that the theme of the novel is clear. The experience of Hester and Dimmesdale r
28、ecalls the story ofAdam and Evebecause, in both cases, sin results in expulsion and suffering. But it also results in knowledgespecifically, in knowledge of what it means to be immortal. The clash of past and present is explored in various ways. For example, the character of the old General, whose h
29、eroic qualities include a distinguished name, perseverance, integrity, compassion, and moral inner strength, is said to be the soul and spirit ofNew Englandhardihood. Another theme is the extreme legalism of the Puritans and how Hester chooses not to conform to their rules and beliefs.The Scarlet Letter is masterpiece in the world and it will be read by many people .whats more ,it caused much influence in politic and religion.
