ABSTRACT Translating has a long history which can be traced back to at least 2000 years ago, and researchers have done lots of studies in the field since the second half of twentieth century. However, previous translation studies are mainly

9、carried out in a prescriptive way, which are concerned with formulating certain rules or guidelines for the criticism of translation. In the 1970s, the western scholars in translation studies put forth the descriptive approaches, which aim to describe, analyze and explain translation phenomena objec

10、tively instead of valuing translation products subjectively with existing rules or conventions. Gideon Toury is one of the pioneering scholars that have contributed to Descriptive Translation Studies (DTS). He has promoted the study of translation norms by dividing translation norms into three categ

11、ories: preliminary norms, initial norms and operational norms (Toury, 2001:120). Preliminary norms including translation policy and the directness of translation can help reveal the factors constraining the translator before the translating process. Initial norms refer to the overall choice on the i

12、nclination to source culture norms and target culture norms. Operational norms including matricial norms and textual-linguistic norms can be regarded as the micro factors affecting the translation process.(Munday, 2001:114) This thesis takes a descriptive approach to analyze the translation of Hulan

13、he Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River) from Toury9s norm theory. From the perspective of Gideon Toury9s translation norm theory, this thesis is intended to explore Howard Goldblatt English translation of Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River). Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River) is a novel written by a Chin

14、ese writer Xiao Hong. It has been translated into English by Howard Goldblatt. Taking Howard Goldblatts translation of Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River) as an example, this paper describes some translation phenomena and analyses how the translation phenomena have been influenced by translation no

15、rms so as to provide a way to view the whole process of translation as well as translation related activities. Through the analysis, the reconstruction of translation norms is completed, revealing the factors behind the decision-making process. There come the following conclusions: the selection of

16、source text and the directness of translation are influenced by the translators identity and the social cultural environment which construct preliminary norms; the overall choice of acceptability is influenced by the social cultural environment and readers expectancy which construct the initial norm

17、 of acceptability ； matricial phenomena such as restructuring short paragraphs and adding titles to each chapter are influenced by readers expectancy which construct matricial norms. Translation strategies including in-text connotation for culture-loaded words and choice of present tense to represen

18、t literary style are influenced by the translators identity and readers expectancy which construct textual-linguistic norms. Based on the case study of Howard Goldblatt9s translation of Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River) from Tourys norm theory, this thesis finds that factors including social cult

19、ural environment, the translators identity and readers expectancy have given a comprehensive explanation of this translation product. In this way, the author of this thesis hopes that this research can provide a new perspective to study the translation of Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River) and can

20、 help to predict the factors which govern translators decision if translation will be done in the similar circumstance as Howard Goldblatts translation. 21、两千年前，并且很多学者对翻译已经做了大 量而广泛的研究。但是以前的翻译研究大多是规定性的，关注的是制定一系列规 则和标准来指导翻译实践和翻译批评。而在 20 世纪 70 年代，西方翻译界提出了 描述性的方法，旨在取代原本 以既存的标准和规约评价翻译的方法，对翻译现象 进行客观的描述，分析，以及解释。吉迪恩 图里就是首先提出这种研究方法的 学者之一，他发展了描述翻译学。图里的描述翻译学介绍了三种规范，即预备规 范，初始规范和操作规范。预备规范包括翻译的政策及翻译的直接性，涉及到翻 译过程前影响译者行为的因素；初始规范是指对于源于文化规范和译语文化规范 的倾向性；操作规范包括母体规范和篇章语言规范

22、，是指影响翻译过程细节的因 素。 （ Munday， 2001: 114) 本文采用描述性的方法，以图里的翻译规范为视角，对葛浩文的呼兰河传 英译本进行分析。本文通过对译本中一些翻译现象进行描述，分析现象背后的制 约规范，在分析过程中将完成翻译规范在译本中的的重构，以揭示翻译决策过程 中的影响因素。最后从三个方面总结由翻译规范重构反映出的影响翻译决策过程 的因素 ： 译者对原作的选择及直接翻译方法受社会环境和译者身份制约，构成了 预备规范；译者做出的译本的 “ 可接受性 ” 选择是受到社会文化环境与读者期待 制约，构成了 “ 可接受性 ” 初始规范。译作中的母体处理现象包括融合小段及 章节加标

31、uan (Tales of Hulan River) from the perspective of Toury9s norm theory. Though the practice of translation is long established, the study of the field developed into an academic discipline has only really begun in the second half of the twentieth century (Munday, 2001:5). Moreover, previous translat

32、ion studies are mainly carried out in a prescriptive way, which are concerned with formulating certain rules or guidelines for the criticism of translation. It was in the 1970s that the western translation studies put forth the descriptive approaches on translation, which aim to describe, analyze an

33、d explain translation phenomenon objectively instead of valuing it subjectively with existing rules or conventions like prescriptive studies did. From the perspective of Gideon Toury9s translation norm theory, this thesis is intended to explore Howard Goldblatt English translation of Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hula

As a case study, this thesis will try to set up a comprehensive framework for the analysis of the English translation of Hulanhe Zhuan (Tales of Hulan River), including the objective factors and the subjective factors, as well as the macro social cultural factors and the micro translation

36、skills. 1.1.1 Why Choose Tourys Norm Theory as a Perspective 6In contradistinction to non-empirical sciences, empirical disciplines are devised to account, in a systematic and controlled way, for particular segments of the real world. Consequently, no empirical science can make a claim for completeness and autonomy unless it has a proper descriptive branch.(Toury， 2001:110).
