1、The Ways Metaphor is Brought into V ocabulary Teaching【Abstract】The purpose of vocabulary teaching inEnglish is to enlarge breadth and depth of vocabulary and Fromthe point of cognitive metaphor，meaning extension ofvocabulary contributes a lot to the vocabulary teaching.Thepaper tries to sum up ways

2、 metaphor is brought into teaching asa means of improving English teaching.【Key words】metaphor；cognition；concept metaphor；metaphorical vocabularyIt is well known that the purpose of vocabulary teaching inEnglish is to enlarge breadth and depth of vocabulary.English isnot only rich in vocabulary but

3、every single word has severalmeanings.However，the relation among meanings of polysemyis not arbitrary but well-grounded with certain semanticextension.If studying the origin of words，we easily find thatthere is metaphor functioning.So，students are required tothink about similarity of several related

4、 meanings of one wordwhile the teacher should explain connotation and denotation（ormetaphor or metonymy）of some words to students so as toenable them to get the command of development andevolvement mechanism of the meanings as well as to improvetheir reading comprehensive ability.And，the teacher sho

5、uldalso cultivate students metaphorical ability，an ability equal tothat of grammar and of communication.There are ways to insert metaphor into English teaching，especially words teaching.I.To introduce metaphorical thinking mode to studentsOn the basis of linguistic evidence，we have found thatmost of

6、 our ordinary conceptual system is metaphorical innature.But，metaphor is just superficies in language use.Whatindeed works is concept metaphor rooted in our conceptualsystem.Therefore，the teacher should first get use of researchachievement in metaphor and explain what concept metaphoris，then analyze

7、 its phenomenon to spark their interest forthinking upon it.Take surf as an example.It is hard to tie surfing withInternet before surfing the Internet came into being.Theexpression has intangibly got extension and acceptedmetaphoric meaning of surf ，highlighting features of Internet.And Time is mone

8、y is widely-used concept metaphor andwaste time，run out of time，save time，spend time ect.as well in English，so is it in Chinese.We understand andconceptualize time as the kind of things that we do for money.Meanwhile，metaphor，a cognitive and thinking way，shares similarities among cultures but differ

9、ences in specificlanguage expressions.If students know spatial metaphor aboutUP and DOWN，they would have a skillful mind ofcollocation and formation of phrases.UP implies anythingpositive，and DOWN negative.So，the teacher should makethe extension and explanation of UP and DOWN，on the basisof which st

10、udents have the idea that why UP and DOWN canpossess the meaning of happy and unhappy.Only when theycomprehend its metaphoric meaning do students can get acrossthe true meaning of such collocations.Anyway，conscious training of students metaphoric thinking enables themto learn how to speculate and or

11、ganize language phenomenonwith metaphor，facilitating them to improve their conceptualfluency.II.To know culture features of each metaphor impliedOur knowledge of the world is influenced by theenvironment we live in the same as metaphor is confined tohistory，customs，belief，value standard，etc.，showing

12、obvious national culture feathers.English learners have tostrengthen their understanding of culture and cognitive mode ofthe target language.Students should learn hoe English and Americans think andhave an eye on cross-cultural comparison in vocabularymetaphor to compare the differences between Engl

13、ish andChinese for a correct use of words.III.To combine cognitive context with metaphorvocabularyTo this end，the teacher should lead students to associatingcontextual knowledge with similarity theory of metaphor to usethe analyzing approaches of metaphorical meaning of words.In short，to some extent
