21、est ive ever gotten to a college graduation.today i want to tell you three stories from my life.thats it.no big deal.just three stories.the first story is about connecting the dots.i dropped out of reed college after the first 6 months, but then stayed around as a drop-in for another 18 months or so
22、 before i really quit.so why did i drop out? it started before i was born.my biological mother was a young, unwed college graduate student, and she decided to put me up for adoption.she felt very strongly that i should be adopted by college graduates, so everything was all set for me to be adopted a
23、t birth by a lawyer and his wife.e_cept that when i popped out they decided at the last minute that they really wanted a girl.so my parents, who were on a waiting list, got a call in the middle of the night asking: “we have an une_pected baby boy; do you want him?” they said: “of course.” my biologi
24、cal mother later found out that my mother had never graduated from college and that my father had never graduated from high school.she refused to sign the final adoption papers.she only relented a few months later when my parents promised that i would someday go to college.and 17 years later i did g
25、o to college.but i naively chose a college that was almost as e_pensive as stanford, and all of my working-class parents savings were being spent on my college tuition.after si_ months, i couldnt see the value in it.i had no idea what i wanted to do with my life and no idea how college was going to
26、help me figure it out.and here i was spending all of the money my parents had saved their entire life.so i decided to drop out and trust that it would all work out ok.it was pretty scary at the time, but looking back it was one of the best decisions i ever made.the minute i dropped out i could s tak
27、ing the required classes that didnt interest me, and begin dropping in on the ones that looked interesting.it wasnt all romantic.i didnt have a dorm room, so i slept on the floor in friends rooms, i returned coke bottles for the 5 deposits to buy food with, and i would walk the 7 miles across town e
28、very sunday night to get one good meal a week at the hare krishna temple.i loved it.and much of what i stumbled into by follog my curiosity and intuition turned out to be priceless later on.let me give you one e_le: reed college at that time offered perhaps the best calligraphy instruction in the co
29、untry.throughout the cus every poster, every label on every drawer, was beautifully hand calligraphed.because i had dropped out and didnt have to take the normal classes, i decided to take a calligraphy class to learn how to do this.i learned about serif and san serif typefaces, about varying the am
30、ount of space between different letter binations, about what makes great typography great.it was beautiful, historical, artistically subtle in a way that science cant capture, and i found it fascinating.none of this had even a hope of any practical lication in my life.but ten years later, when we we
31、re designing the first macintosh puter, it all came back to me.and we designed it all into the mac.it was the first puter with beautiful typography.if i had never dropped in on that single course in college, the mac would have never had multiple typefaces or proportionally spaced fonts.and since dow
32、s just copied the mac, its likely that no personal puter would have them.if i had never dropped out, i would have never dropped in on this calligraphy class, and personal puters might not have the wonderful typography that they do.of course it was impossible to connect the dots looking forward when
33、i was in college.but it was very, very clear looking backwards ten years later.again, you cant connect the dots looking forward; you can only connect them looking backwards.so you have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future.you have to trust in something - your gut, destiny, life
34、, karma, whatever.this roach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.my second story is about love and loss.i was lucky i found what i loved to do early in life.woz and i started le in my parents garage when i was 20.we worked hard, and in 10 years le had grown from just
35、 the two of us in a garage into a $2 billion pany with over 4000 employees.we had just released our finest creation - the macintosh - a year earlier, and i had just turned 30.and then i got fired.how can you get fired from a pany you started? well, as le grew we hired someone who i thought was very
36、talented to run the pany with me, and for the first year or so things went well.but then our visions of the future began to diverge and eventually we had a falling out.when we did, our board of directors sided with him.so at 30 i was out.and very publicly out.what had been the focus of my entire adu
37、lt life was gone, and it was devastating.i really didnt know what to do for a few months.i felt that i had let the previous generation of entrepreneurs down - that i had dropped the baton as it was being passed to me.i met with david packard and bob noyce and tried to apologize for screg up so badly
38、.i was a very public failure, and i even thought about running away from the valley.but something slowly began to dawn on me i still loved what i did.the turn of events at le had not changed that one bit.i had been rejected, but i was still in love.and so i decided to start over.i didnt see it then,
39、 but it turned out that getting fired from le was the best thing that could have ever hened to me.the heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything.it freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.during the ne_t fiv
40、e years, i started a pany named ne_t, another pany named pi_ar, and fell in love with an amazing woman who would bee my wife.pi_ar went on to create the worlds first puter animated feature film, toy story, and is now the most successful animation studio in the world.in a remarkable turn of events, l
