He must teach himself that the basest of allthings is to be afraid; and teaching himself that forget it forever leaving noroom in his workshop for anything but the old verities and truths of the heartthe old universal truths lacking
7、 which any story is ephemeral and doomed - loveand honor and pity and pride and compassion and sacrifice. Until he does so helabors under a curse. He writes not of love but of lust of defeats in whichnobody loses anything of value of victories without hope and worst of allwithout pity or compassion.
8、 His griefs grieve on no universal bones leaving noscars. He writes not of the heart but of the glands. Until he relearns these things he will write as though he stood among andwatched the end of man. I decline to accept the end of man. It is easy enough tosay that man is immortal simply because he
9、will endure: that when the lastding-dong of doom has clanged and faded from the last worthless rock hangingtideless in the last red and dying evening that even then there will still beone more sound: that of his puny inexhaustible voice still talking. I refuse toaccept this. I believe that man will
10、not merely endure: he will prevail. He isimmortal not because he alone among creatures has an inexhaustible voice butbecause he has a soul a spirit capable of compassion and sacrifice andendurance. The poets the writer&39;s duty is to write about these things. It is hisprivilege to help man endure b
11、y lifting his heart by reminding him of thecourage and honor and hope and pride and compassion and pity and sacrifice whichhave been the glory of his past. 14、 took for the crew of theshuttle. But they the Challenger Seven were aware of the dangers but overcamethem and did their jobs brilliantly. We mourn seven heroes: Michael Smith DickScobee Judith Resnik Ronald McNair Ellison Onizuka Gregory Jarvis and ChristaMcAuliffe. We mourn their loss as a nation
15、together. For the families of the seven we cannot bear as you do the full impact ofthis tragedy. But we feel the loss and we&39;re thinking about you so very much.Your loved ones were daring and brave and they had that special grace thatspecial spirit that says "Give me a challenge and I&39;ll
16、meet it with joy." Theyhad a hunger to explore the universe and discover its truths. They wished toserve and they did. They served all of us. We&39;ve grown used to wonders in this century. It&39;s hard to dazzle us. Butfor twenty-five years the United States space program has been doing just t
17、hat.We&39;ve grown used to the idea of space and perhaps we forget that we&39;ve only justbegun. We&39;re still pioneers. They the members of the Challenger crew werepioneers. And I want to say something to the schoolchildren of America who werewatching the live coverage of the shuttle&39;s take-off
18、. I know it&39;s hard tounderstand but sometimes painful things like this happen. It&39;s all part of theprocess of exploration and discovery. It&39;s all part of taking a chance andexpanding man&39;s horizons. The future doesn&39;t belong to the fainthearted; itbelongs to the brave. The Challenger
