They believed that nothing would ever change.But inFrance things were bad, and getting worse. The people were poor,hungryand unhappy. The King made paper money and spent it,

Behind closed doors in the homes of the people,voices spokein whispers against the King and his noblemen;theywere onlywhispers, but they were the angry whispers of desperate people.Late one November night, in that same year 1775, a coachgoing fromLondon to Dover, sto

5、pped at the top of a long hill. The horses weretired,but as they rested, the driver heard an other horse coming fast upthehill behind them. The rider stopped his horse beside the coach andshouted:I want a passenger, Mr Jarvis Lorry, from Tellsons Bankin London.I am Mr Jarvis Lorry, said one of the p

6、assengers,putting his headout of the window.What do you want?Its meJerry, JerryCruncher, from Tellsons Bank, sir, criedthe man on the horse.Whats the matter, Jerry? called Mr Lorry.A message for you, Mr Lorry. Mr Lorry asked the young lady to sit down.Miss Manette, he said.I have a strange story to tellyou, aboutone of the customers of Tellsons Bank. Thats where I work.Yes, but I dont quite understand, Mr

9、Lorry, said theyounglady.I received a message from Tellsons Bank, asking me to come heretomeet you. I understood there was some news about mypoor fathers money. Hedied so long agobefore I was born. Whatisthis story you want to tellme?About twenty years ago, Miss Manette, a French doctormarried anEng

10、lish lady. They had a daughter, but just before she was born,herfather disappeared. Nobody knew what had happened to him. Notlongafterwards his unhappy wife died, and their daughter was broughtback toEngland.But this is like my fathers story, Mr Lorry. And wasntit you whobrought me back to England?

11、Yes, thats true, Miss Manette. Many years ago I broughtyou fromFrance to England, and Tellsons Bank has taken care of you sincethen.You were told that your father had died. But think, Miss Manette.Perhapsyour father wasnt dead. Perhaps he was in prison. Not because hehaddone something wrong But just

20、bout sixty and a young lady.Defarge went over to speak to them,suddenly kissed the young ladys hand, andled them out of the back ofthe shop. They followed him upstairs, many stairs,until they reached thetop. Defarge took a key out of his pocket.Why is the door locked? asked Mr Lorry in surprise.He i

21、sa freeman now.Because he has lived too long behind a locked door, repliedDefarge angrily.He is afraid if the door is not lockedThatis one ofthe things they have done to him. Im afraid, too, whispered Miss Manette. Her blue eyeslookedworriedly at Mr Lorry.I am afraid of himofmy father.Defarge made a

After a while henoticed her.Who are you? he asked.Lucie put her arms around the old man and held him, tearsofhappiness and sadness running down her face. From a little bag the oldmantook some golden hair. He looked at it, and

He stared into Lucies face.No, no,you aretooyoung, too young.Through her tears Lucie tried to explain that she was thedaughter hehad never seen. The old man still did not understand, but heseemed to like the sound of Lucies voice and the to

26、uch of her warm young handonhis.Then Lucie said to Mr Lorry, I think we should leave Parisat once.Can you arrange it?Yes, of course, said Mr Lorry.But do you think he isable totravel?He will be better far away from this city where he haslost so muchof his life, said Lucie.You are right, said Defarge

27、.And there are many otherreasons whyDr Manette should leave France now.While Mr Lorry and Defarge went to arrange for a coach totake themout of Paris, Lucie sat with her father. Exhausted by the meeting,hefell asleep on the floor, and his daughter watched him quietlyandpatiently until it was time to

28、 go.When Mr Lorry returned, he and Defarge brought food andclothes forDr Manette. The Doctor did everything they told him to do;hehad beenused to obeying orders for so many years.As he came down the stairs,Mr Lorry heard him say again and again,One Hundred and Five, North Tower.When they went to the

Outside the building satJerry Cruncher,who carried messages for people in the bank.One morning in March 1780, Jerry had to go to the OldBailey tocollect an important message from Mr Lorry. Trials at the Old Baileywereusually for very dange

35、rous criminals, and the prisoner that morning wasayoung man of about twentyfive, welldressed and quite calm.Whats he done? Jerry asked the doorman quietly. Hes a spyA Frenchspythe doorman told him. He travelsfromEngland to France and tells the French King secret information aboutourEnglish army.What

36、ll happen if hes guilty? asked Jerry.oh, hell have to die, no question of that, replied thedoormanenthusiastically.Theyll hang him.Whats his name?Darnay, Charles Darnay. Not an English name, is it?While Jerry waited, he looked around at the crowd insidethe OldBailey and noticed a young lady of about

37、 twenty years, and her father,agentleman with very white hair. The young lady seemed very sad whenshelooked at the prisoner, and held herself close to her father.Then the trial began, and the first person who spokeagainst CharlesDarnay was called John Barsad.He was an honest man, he said, and proud

38、to be anEnglishman. Yes, hewas, or had been, a friend of the prisoners. And in theprisonerspockets he had seen important plans and lists about the Englisharmies.No, of course he had not put the lists there himself. And no, he wasnota spy himself, he was not someone paid to make traps for innocent pe

39、ople.Next the young lady spoke. She said that she had met theprisoner onthe boat which had carried her and her father from France toEngland.Hewas very good and kind to my father and to me, she said.Was he travelling alone on the ship?No, he was with two French gentlemen. Now, Miss Manette, did you s

40、ee him show them any papers,or anythingthat looked like a list?No, I didnt see anything like that.Questions, questions, questionsThetrial went on, and finally, asmall, red,hairedman spoke.He told the judge that he had seen Mr Darnay at a hotel in atownwhere there were many soldiers and ships. 41、ne of the lawyers, amancalled Sydney Carton, wrote some words on a piece of paper, and gaveit to MrStryver, the lawyer who was speaking for Mr Darnay.Are you quite sure that the prisoner is the man you saw?Mr Stryverasked the red,hairedman.Quite sure, said the man.Have you ever seen anyone like the

42、prisoner? asked MrStryver.Id always be able to recognize him. The red,hairedman was veryconfident.Then I must ask you to look at the gentleman over there, said MrStryver, pointing to Sydney Carton.Dont you think that he is verylikethe prisoner?Everyone in the court could see that Sydney Carton andCh

43、arles Darnaywere indeed very similar.Well then, said Mr Stryver, it is so easy to find a manlike theprisoner that we can even find one in this room. So how can you besosure that it was the prisoner you saw in that hotel? And the red,hairedman said not another word.The lawyers talked and argued, and

44、when at last the trialcame to anend, Jerry Cruncher had fallen asleep.But Mr Lorry woke him up and gave him a piece of paper.NOT GUILTYwere the words written on it, and Jerry hurried back to TellsonsBankwith the message.Sydney Carton seemed to be a man who did not care aboutanyone oranything. He was

45、 Mr Stryvers assistant. In fact, he did most of therealwork for Mr Stryver. Stryver was good at speaking at a trial, but hewasnot good at discovering important facts and details, especially whenthesedetails were hidden in a lot of papers. Every night Carton studiedthe manypapers that lawyers have to

46、 read, and he wrote down thequestions whichStryver should ask at the next days trial. And every dayStryver asked thesequestions, and people thought how clever he was.Outside the Old Bailey Mr Darnay, now a free man, met hisfriends: DrManette and hisdaughterLucie, Mr Jarvis Lorry, Mr Stryver, and Mr Carton.Dr Manette no longer looked like the man in the room aboveDefargeswine,shop five yearsago. Hishair was white, but his eyes were bright and he stoodstraight and
