They believed that nothing would ever change.But inFrance things were bad, and getting worse. The people were poor,hungryand unhappy. The King made paper money and spent it,
4、and thepeople hadnothing to eat. Behind closed doors in the homes of the people,voices spokein whispers against the King and his noblemen;theywere onlywhispers, but they were the angry whispers of desperate people.Late one November night, in that same year 1775, a coachgoing fromLondon to Dover, sto
5、pped at the top of a long hill. The horses weretired,but as they rested, the driver heard an other horse coming fast upthehill behind them. The rider stopped his horse beside the coach andshouted:I want a passenger, Mr Jarvis Lorry, from Tellsons Bankin London.I am Mr Jarvis Lorry, said one of the p
6、assengers,putting his headout of the window.What do you want?Its meJerry, JerryCruncher, from Tellsons Bank, sir, criedthe man on the horse.Whats the matter, Jerry? called Mr Lorry.A message for you, Mr Lorry. Youve got to wait at Doverfor a younglady. Very well, Jerry, said Mr Lorry.Tell them my an

No one inthe coachunderstood what they meant.The next day Mr Lorry was sitting in his hotel in Doverwhen a younglady arrived. Mr Lorry asked the young lady to sit down.Miss Manette, he said.I have a strange story to tellyou, aboutone of the customers of Tellsons Bank. Thats where I work.Yes, but I dont quite understand, Mr
9、Lorry, said theyounglady.I received a message from Tellsons Bank, asking me to come heretomeet you. I understood there was some news about mypoor fathers money. Hedied so long agobefore I was born. Whatisthis story you want to tellme?About twenty years ago, Miss Manette, a French doctormarried anEng
10、lish lady. They had a daughter, but just before she was born,herfather disappeared. Nobody knew what had happened to him. Notlongafterwards his unhappy wife died, and their daughter was broughtback toEngland.But this is like my fathers story, Mr Lorry. And wasntit you whobrought me back to England?
11、Yes, thats true, Miss Manette. Many years ago I broughtyou fromFrance to England, and Tellsons Bank has taken care of you sincethen.You were told that your father had died. But think, Miss Manette.Perhapsyour father wasnt dead. Perhaps he was in prison. Not because hehaddone something wrong But just

They followed him upstairs, many stairs,until they reached thetop. Defarge took a key out of his pocket.Why is the door locked? asked Mr Lorry in surprise.He i
