5、rniaGovernorLelandStanfordpurchased650acresofRanchoSanFrancisquitoforacountryhomeandbeganthedevelopmentofhisfamousPaloAltoStockFarm.Helaterboughtadjoiningpropertiestotalingmorethan8,000acres.LelandStanford,whogrewupandstudiedlawinNewYork,movedWestafterthegoldrushand,likemanyofhiswealthycontemporarie

6、s,madehisfortuneintherailroads.HewasaleaderoftheRepublicanParty,governorofCaliforniaandlateraU.S.senator.HeandJanehadoneson,whodiedoftyphoidfeverin1884whenthefamilywastravelinginItaly.LelandJr.wasjust15.Withinweeksofhisdeath,theStanfordsdecidedthat,becausetheynolongercoulddoanythingfortheirownchild,

7、thechildrenofCaliforniashallbeourchildren.Theyquicklysetabouttofindalastingwaytomemorializetheirbelovedson.TheStanfordsconsideredseveralpossibilitiesauniversity,atechnicalschool,amuseum.WhileontheEastCoast,theyvisitedHarvard,MIT,CornellandJohnsHopkinstoseekadviceonstartinganewuniversityinCalifornia.

8、Ultimately,theydecidedtoestablishtwoinstitutionsinLelandJuniorsname-theUniversityandamuseum.Fromtheoutsettheymadesomeuntraditionalchoices:theuniversitywouldbecoeducational,inatimewhenmostwereall-male;non-denominational,whenmostwereassociatedwithareligiousorganization;andavowedlypractical,producingcu

9、lturedandusefulcitizens.OnOctober1,1891,StanfordUniversityopeneditsdoorsaftersixyearsofplanningandbuilding.ThepredictionofaNewYorknewspaperthatStanfordprofessorswouldlectureinmarblehallstoemptybencheswasquicklydisproved.Thefirststudentbodyconsistedof555menandwomen,andtheoriginalfacultyof15wasexpande

10、dto49forthesecondyear.TheuniversitysfirstpresidentwasDavidStarrJordan,agraduateofCornell,wholefthispostaspresidentofIndianaUniversitytojointheadventureoutWest.WESTTheStanfordandTheSiliconValleyInthe1970s,theStanfordrentout1,000acresareatothecompaniesthatarefoundedbygraduatesorindustrialandcommercial

11、circles.Today,theStanfordisbesiegedbymanytechnicalcommunitiesandcompanies.Withtheriseofthehightechnologyonthewest-coastline,manycomputercompaniespitchcampsthere,includingthecenturydarlingMicrosoft.Fromthenon,thestatusoftheStanfordbecomesmoreandmoreimportant.TheStanfordbecomesthecoreoftheSiliconValle

12、yandthecenteroftheworldwidetechnicalinnovation.SchoolmottoThewindoffreedomblowsThissentencesincethe16thcenturyGermananthropologistUlrichvonHuttenThemottoistoencourageandguaranteestudentsandfacultiesintheStanfordtodoteachingandrelevantresearchingfreely.SchoolbadgeItwasfoundedin1891.Thestarsrepresentt
