8、ingonhere?TheInstantGratificationMonkeydoesnotseemlikeaguyyouwantbehindthewheel.Helivesentirelyinthepresentmoment.Hehasnomemoryofthepast,noknowledgeofthefuture,2020/12/2413andheonlycaresabouttwothings:easyandfun.Now,intheanimalworld,thatworksfine.AndtotheMonkey,humansarejustanotheranimalspecies.Youh

14、rtantthingshappen?Well,turnsouttheprocrastinatorhasaguardianangel,someonewhosalwayslookingdownonhimandwatchingoverhiminhisdarkestmoments2020/12/2420someonecalledthePanicMonster.Now,thePanicMonsterisdormantmostofthetime,buthesuddenlywakesupanytimeadeadlinegetstoocloseortheresdangerofpublicembarrassme

15、nt,acareerdisasterorsomeotherscaryconsequence.Andimportantly,hestheonlythingtheMonkeyisterrifiedof.Now,hebecameveryrelevantinmylifeprettyrecently,becausethepeopleofTEDreachedouttomeaboutsixmonthsagoandinvitedmetodoaTEDTalk.2020/12/2421Now,ofcourse,Isaidyes.ItsalwaysbeenadreamofminetohavedoneaTEDTalk

18、dedtowriteaboutontheblogacoupleofyearsago.WhenIdid,Iwasamazedbytheresponse.Literallythousandsofemailscamein,fromalldifferentkindsofpeoplefromallovertheworld,doingalldifferentkindsofthings.2020/12/2425Thesearepeoplewhowerenurses,bankers,painters,engineersandlotsandlotsofPhDstudents.Andtheywereallwrit

19、ing,sayingthesamething:Ihavethisproblemtoo.Butwhatstruckmewasthecontrastbetweenthelighttoneofthepostandtheheavinessoftheseemails.Thesepeoplewerewritingwithintensefrustrationaboutwhatprocrastinationhaddonetotheirlives,aboutwhatthisMonkeyhaddonetothem.AndIthoughtaboutthis,andIsaid,well,iftheprocrastin

20、atorssystemworks,thenwhatsgoingon?Whyareallofthesepeopleinsuchadarkplace?Well,itturnsoutthattherestwokindsofprocrastination.EverythingIvetalkedabouttoday,theexamplesIvegiven,theyallhavedeadlines.2020/12/2426Andwhentheresdeadlines,theeffectsofprocrastinationarecontainedtotheshorttermbecausethePanicMo

21、nstergetsinvolved.Buttheresasecondkindofprocrastinationthathappensinsituationswhenthereisnodeadline.Soifyouwantedacareerwhereyoureaself-starter-somethinginthearts,somethingentrepreneurial-theresnodeadlinesonthosethingsatfirst,becausenothingshappening,notuntilyouvegoneoutanddonethehardworktogetmoment

22、um,getthingsgoing.NowiftheprocrastinatorsonlymechanismofdoingthesehardthingsisthePanicMonster,thatsaproblem,becauseinallofthesenon-deadlinesituations,thePanicMonsterdoesntshowup.Hehasnothingtowakeupfor,sotheeffectsofprocrastination,theyrenotcontained;theyjustextendoutwardforever.2020/12/2427Anditsth

23、islong-termkindofprocrastinationthatsmuchlessvisibleandmuchlesstalkedaboutthanthefunnier,short-termdeadline-basedkind.Itsusuallysufferedquietlyandprivately.Anditcanbethesourceofahugeamountoflong-termunhappiness,andregrets.AndIthought,thatswhythosepeopleareemailing,andthatswhytheyreinsuchabadplace.It

24、snotthattheyrecrammingforsomeproject.Itsthatlong-termprocrastinationhasmadethemfeellikeaspectator,attimes,intheirownlives.Thefrustrationisnotthattheycouldntachievetheirdreams;itsthattheywerentevenabletostartchasingthem.SoIreadtheseemailsandIhadalittlebitofanepiphany-thatIdontthinknon-procrastinators

25、exist.Thatsright-Ithinkallofyouareprocrastinators.Now,youmightnotallbeamess,likesomeofus,andsomeofyoumayhaveahealthyrelationshipwithdeadlines,butremember:theMonkeyssneakiesttrickiswhenthedeadlinesarentthere.2020/12/2428Now,Iwanttoshowyouonelastthing.IcallthisaLifeCalendar.Thatsoneboxforeveryweekofa9
