3、s.In this unit,the status quo of phenomena associated with copyright such as movie and book piracy will be presented,various factors contributing to the phenomena will be discussed,and potential solutions to the copyright infringement problem will be considered.Students will acquire a better and mor
4、e thorough understanding about copyright protection through various listening,watching,reading and speaking activities.They will also conduct real-life learning projects like surveying college students awareness of copyright and debating on“Movie Piracy Sentence:Does the Punishment Fit the Crime”wit
5、h their peers to put what they have learned in class into use.Unit OverviewBackground InformationCopyright is a legal term describing rights given to creators for their literary and artistic works.It begins at the moment of creation when the work of authorship is fixed in a tangible medium.The three
6、 elements for copyright ownership and protection are creativity,originality and fixation.Copyright owners hold the exclusive right to use or authorize others to use their literary or artistic works on agreed terms.Literary works include novels,poems,plays,reference works,newspapers and computer prog
7、rams;databases;films,musical compositions,and choreography,while artistic works cover paintings,drawings,photographs and sculpture;architecture;advertisements,maps and technical drawings.The use of those works can be in the form of reproduction,public performance,recordings,broadcasting and translat
8、ion or adaptation.Copyright protection includes both economic rights and moral rights.Copyright owners enjoy economic rights with a time limit of 50 years after the creators death according to the relevant WIPO(World Intellectual Property Organization)treaties.Such a limit enables both creators and
9、their heirs to benefit financially for a reasonable period of time.Moral rights,on the other hand,involve the right to claim authorship of a work,and the right to oppose changes to it that could harm the creators reputation.The primary purpose of copyright law is not so much to protect the interests
10、 of the authors/creators,but rather to promote the progress of science and the useful arts that is knowledge.To accomplish this purpose,copyright ownership encourages authors/creators in their efforts by granting them a temporary monopoly or ownership of exclusive rights for a specified length of ti
11、me so that their works can be disseminated without fear of unauthorized copying or piracy.This in turn helps increase access to and enhances the enjoyment of culture,knowledge,and entertainment all over the world.The field of copyright and related rights has expanded enormously with the technologica
12、l progress of the last several decades.Dissemination of works via the Internet is but the latest development which raises new questions concerning copyright.WIPO is deeply involved in the ongoing international debate to shape new standards for copyright protection in cyberspace and setting down inte
