8、ylor was an American actor who was born in 1911 and died in 1969. He made his first film appearance in 1934. Early in his career, he was known as he man with the perfect profile”. One of his first major films was Camille (1936), playing opposite Greta Garbo. Strikingly handsome with wavy black hair

9、and blue eyes he was an instant heart-throb from his first film appearance. In later life, he made many television appearances, notably in the 1959 series, The Detectives Starring Robert Taylor.2. Winston Churchill (1874-1965) was bom on 30th November, 1874. He was educated at Harrow and Sandhurst.

10、After a brief but eventful career in the army, he became a Conservative Member of Parliament in 1900. He held many high posts in Liberal and Conservative governments during the first three decades of the 20th century. At the outbreak of the Second World War, he was appointed First Lord of the Admira

11、ltya post which he had earlier held from 1911 to 1915. In May, 1940, he became Prime Minister and Minister of Defense and remained in office until 1945. ListeningHave you ever thought of making friends with a person whom you have never met but found greatly challenging to you in life? Text A is a story about two boys, who become challenging

16、 friends to each other in their life time. Now lets listen to a dialogue and try to get as much information from it as possible.Tapescript:W: In just a minute, well introduce an old friend of yours, and Ill interview you both about your unique friendship. But first, do you have something to say?M: I

17、d like to make something clear. The man isnt my friend, well, not really.W: You mean you dont like him?M: No. Thats not quite it. Ive never met him.W: How do you know him then?M: My family members always told me how great he was. It really made me angry at times. But I guess it was kind of good for

18、me too, because it caused me to work harder and harder.W: Im excited to hear more! Lets bring him out here and learn what he has to say!Q. 1 What information can we get from the dialogue?For Reference:From the prologue to this interview, we know that the two friends did not know each other, or, to b

19、e more exact, they had never met one another yet. But they indeed had been friends with each other, because their family members always told how great the other one was. That really made both of them angry at times, but meanwhile they felt it was kind of good for them. From what the interviewee said

20、 as well as from the title of the text, we can easily guess that their anger resulted from the other ones challenge, which in turn pushed them on. But, how did all this get into effect? Now lets come to the next question.Q. 2 How did two unknown friends form such a challenge to each other then?For R

21、eference:For such a challenge to go into effect, there must be some contributors. First, there must be a person, like family members as stated in the interview, who made vivid comparisons between both, so as to keep them informed of how great the other one was. Second, there must be some similaritie

22、s between them two. For example, they may be of the same age, from the same family background, or in the same field of study. And above all, both must be willing to answer the challenge from the other one, although they may get angry at the mention of the other one from time to time.Q. 3 What would

23、the comparisons result in then?For Reference:Such comparisons, though sometimes liable to drive one or both to breakup, inspired them to push ahead with their studies or pursuits, because it is the nature of human beings to respond with active action to the challenges from their rivals, especially f

24、rom their peers. If there is little chance for one peer to overtake the other in something, for example, one is so unwilling to give in as to look round for something else, in which one could have an edge on the other. That may be applicable to most peers whose ambition for future serves as a prime

27、nce in life.Q5. Whafs your definition of ideal friendship?Friendship may be many things to many people. But, from my angle of view, friendship is an indicator of shared taste for life. As an old Chinese saying goes, things of a kind come together whereas people of a mind fall into the same group. Th

28、is can also be confirmed in Addisons remarks that great souls turn by instinct to each othe匚 No wonder that the best way of knowing a person is through judging by his company.Besides, it is also a symbol of appealing to each othe匚 If much in common holds both together, the most special thing about e

29、ither then can serve to attract the other one. Your friends edge in math, for instance, should be of great interest to you, while your lead in English may arouse your friends curiosity.And most of all, friendship is a fruit of concerted and consistent quest for such virtues as tolerance, considerate

30、ness, sacrifice, and timely concern with each other in adversity. As Richard Graves once put it, a friend in need is a friend indeed.Q6. How to establish an ideal friendship with people around?An ideal friendship, in its real sense, is established through three steps of great effort. It must be base

31、d on the common ground between both, ranging from the same hobbits to corporate will and shared ambition, without which both even stand little chance of acquaintance. Just as Delile once put it, fate makes relatives, but choice makes friends.In addition, it must also be built on the mutual attractio

32、n in relation to such aspects as knowledge, skill, wisdom, competence, good tastes for anything, etc. You should grow better at what your friend is expert in; in other words, friends should dawn on each others edges and raise the level togethe匚And most of all, it must be sustained through good exerc

33、ise of such virtues as sincerity, faithfulness and readiness to help. As William Penn once pointed out, a true friend talks turkey, advices justly, assists readily, adventures boldly, takes all patiently, defends courageously, and continues a friend unchangeable.III. Structure AnalysisHow would you

34、deal with the topic as its writer?The author dealt with it by employing the major writing technique comparison and contrast. To achieve a desired effect, the writer began with the background for comparisons by telling about the similarities between the two boys. Then comparisons and contrasts were m

35、ade through the line of time sequence. And eventually he revealed the truth of all this. So the text can be divided into four parts, as shown in the block diagram below:Part I Background (1-2): All of this was made possible by their same relative, Aunt Carrie, who, free with words of praise, pushed

36、the author on by referring to his peer, John Bullyer, far too often, i.e. by comparing the two of them.Part II Comparisons ( 3-7): Comparisons and contrasts were made through stages of their lives. In school, John dealt expertly with mathematics, but the writer even had trouble with percentages; aft

37、er graduation, John went on to do well in math whereas the writer worked with intensity at the craft of writing, eager to rise above John; and, as a result, Johns success was reported in the press while the writer was successful in his own line, with 30 bestsellers published.Part III The truth (8-12

38、): When they met for the first time in a club, both at once realized what had happened to their lives. The real reason why both thought of the other one as more dynamic and cleverer was the game their Aunt Carrie played both ways to spur them on.Part IV Conclusion (13): It dawned upon both of them t

39、hat Aunt Carries well-intentioned comparisons between them were a good push behind their success in life. That was why they drank in honor of their Aunt Carrie in the end.IV. Language points1.
