3、eyondyourborders.Thatisyourprivilege,andyourburden.Ifyouchoosetouseyourstatusandinfluencetoraiseyourvoiceonbehalfofthosewhohavenovoice;ifyouchoosetoidentifynotonlywiththepowerful,butwiththepowerless;ifyouretaintheabilitytoimagineyourselfintothelivesofthosewhodonothaveyouradvantages,thenitwillnotonly

8、rs,mentors,andfriends.AsIthinkbackontheseven-and-a-halfyearsIspentatWashingtonUniversity,mymindisfilledwithmemories,happy,sad,frustrating,andevenhumorous.TonightIwouldliketosharewithyousomeofthememoriesthatItakewithmeasIleaveWashingtonUniversity.ItakewithmethememoryofmyofficeonthefourthfloorofLopata

9、Hall-theroomattheendofthehallwaythatwastoohotinsummer,toocoldinwinter,andalwaystoofarawayfromthewomensrestroom.Thewindowwasmyofficesbestfeature.Wereitnotforthephysicsbuildingacrosstheway,itwouldhaveaffordedmeaclearviewofthearch.ButinsteadIgotaviewoftheroofofthephysicsbuilding.Ialsohadaviewofonecorne

10、roftheroofofUrbauerHall,whichseemedtobeafavoriteperchforvariousspeciesofbirdswhoalternatelywonperchingrightsforseveralweeksatatime.AndIhadaniceviewofthephysicscourtyard,noteworthyasagoodplaceforwatchingpeopleruntheirdogs.ItsamazinghowfascinatingtheseviewsbecamethelongerIworkedonmydissertation.Butmyf

11、avoriteviewwasofanearbyoaktree.Frommyfourth-floorvantagepointIhadaratherintimateviewofthetreeandthevariousbirdsandsquirrelsthatinhabitit.Occasionallyabirdwouldlandonmywindowsill,whichusuallyhadtheeffectofstartlingbothofus.ItakewithmememoriesofthemidwesternfriendlinessthatsosurprisedmewhenIarrivedinS

13、esentativestoacampus-widegraduatestudentgovernment,AGESsoongrewintoanorganizationthatnowsponsorsawidevarietyofactivitiesandhasbeeninstrumentalinaddressinganumberofengineeringgraduatestudentconcerns.ItakewithmethememoryofanEngineeringandPolicydepartmentthatoncehadflourishingprogramsforfull-timeunderg
