14、cording to the US Department of Labor.This high cost forces women to make difficult choices.A KFF study showed that 1 in 4 women had problems paying medical bills in 2020.Of that group,almost half said that medical bills made it difficult to pay for other necessities like housing and food.Meanwhile,

15、the JAMA network pointed out that women are more likely than men to skip a recommended medical test or treatment due to cost.Peppy is one startup working with employers to offer women a solution.Through the Peppy platform,companies can give their employees access to specialized healthcare profession

18、hich has led several femtech startups to focus on fertility benefits.Carrot provides employers and health plan providers with a managed fertility benefit option for several procedures like IVF and egg freezing.The company raised$75M in funding last year after watching its revenue increase 5x over th

19、e previous 2 years.Progyny,another fertility and family-building benefits company,was the first of its kind to go public.At the time of its 2019 IPO,the company was valued at$1.3B.10HOW TECH IS MAKING WOMENS HEALTHCARE MORE EQUITABLE AND ACCESSIBLEOvia Health takes a data-driven approach to reducing

20、 family planning costs and improving outcomes.The startup,which was acquired by Labcorp in 2021,uses its clinical research and algorithms to offer personalized interventions across everything from fertility to caregiver support.The platform is offered through employers as a benefit and,according to

21、the company,delivers a 4x return on investment.Some startups are addressing the high cost of healthcare through creative financing.Gaia works directly with families instead of through employers to make IVF more affordable.It accomplishes this by first measuring potential IVF success rate using its p

22、rediction technology.Clients are then able to make better family planning decisions and reduce the chance of spending thousands of dollars on unsuccessful treatments.Gaia provides a flat rate that doesnt increase for unsuccessful procedures,and it requires those that do successfully give birth to pa

23、y back the cost of completed IVF rounds in monthly installments.Essentially,the plan works like stand-alone insurance,where successful members help cover the costs for those that dont conceive and give birth.VIRTUAL CLINICSThe need to physically attend medical appointments can also be a barrier to w

25、ake access to care simple and hassle-free for women.”Cynthia Zelis,chief medical officer at MDLive,to Healthcare DiveThat may be a key reason why telehealth and virtual medicine are more popular among women.Teladoc,one of the largest virtual healthcare providers,said women made up 64%of its general

28、are.“Twelve months ago,people were saying,The doctors office is dead,and telehealth is the future,But telehealth alone isnt the answer.Its about connected care.”Carolyn Witte,TIA co-founder,via Fierce HealthcarePhysicians who have practiced in traditional brick-and-mortar offices will need to evolve

29、 their practices to meet the growing demand for virtual services.Nabla leaned into the challenge and recently pivoted its product from a B2C virtual clinic to an AI-enabled patient engagement platform.Its designed to help clinicians communicate with patients online at scale.There are even greater di

30、sparities in healthcare for women of color in the US for example,Black women face lower life expectancy and higher maternal mortality rates than other US women.Kiira has built a virtual clinic that gives users 24/7 access to a range of personalized,culture-centric virtual services.The company receiv

33、e delivery gaps.Not coincidentally,the US is also an outlier among its peers given that it does not guarantee access to provider home visits during the post-partum period.Additionally,in contrast to the US,midwives who are often more available in between primary care appointments and have proven key

34、 to maternal death prevention greatly outnumber OB-GYNs in other high-income countries.The overall total of maternity care providers is also much higher outside of the US.As a result,startups in this space are leveraging technology like virtual health apps and at-home testing equipment to reduce the

35、 need for more providers.PREGNANCY AND POSTPARTUMTechnology such as online chat support,machine learning,and remote monitoring could help close the care gap for parents before and after giving birth.Online apps,in particular,can pick up the slack between in-person visits with an OB-GYN.For example,C

38、r a few pieces of information,including what type of care they require and the insurance they have.The app then matches them with experienced providers that can meet them online or at home.Zaya Care raised a nearly$8M seed round led by Inspired Capital in March 2022.Startup Delfina has built a pregn

39、ancy data platform that uses machine learning to help care teams assess the risk of complications before and during childbirth.The platform continuously ingests clinical,physical health,and mental health data to dynamically update a patients risk profile.Clinicians use Delfina to more accurately pre

41、orates a remote blood pressure monitor asa data point for providers to assess pregnancy risks.Nuvo Groups INVU monitors maternal and fetal heart rates,and it sends that information to the clinicians dashboard forongoing assessment.Oulas app acts like a virtual midwife,giving expectantmothers support

42、 in between their in-person provider visits.The startup has received over$3M in funding to date and hasopened 2 in-person clinics to pair with its online services.BREASTFEEDINGNursing mothers often face challenges when beginning to breastfeed.Low milk supply and lack of institutional support and tra

47、ta wirelessly to an app.Breastfeeding moms get real-time milk flow data to ensure their babies receive proper nutrition.Meanwhile,MyMilk Labs Mylee is a sensor that tests the milks electrochemical composition and,with the associated app,tells parents if their milk is progressing at the expected rate

49、od.The stigma around period care makes finding products that fit womens personal needs and preferences much more difficult.In response,femtech startups are creating more personalized solutions for women.For many women,one issue they see with current feminine hygiene products is the amount of waste t

50、hey produce.Some estimates suggest that a single menstruating person will use and discard anywhere from 5,000 to 15,000 pads and tampons over their lifetime.Most of those will wind up in landfills,where theyll take 500 to 800 years to degrade.Germany-based startup VYLD has a more sustainable option:
