But one thing for sure is that it had something to do with religious worship.lpne of the most popular legends tells us that it was a time to worship Taiyi（太一 神），the God of Heaven in ancient times. The God of Heaven controlled the destiny of the human world. He had sixteen dragons a

11、t his beck and call and he could decide when to inflict drought, storms, plague upon human beings. Starting from Qinshihuang, all the subsequent emperors ordered splendid ceremonies to ask Taiyi to bring favorable climate to their country.Development of Lantern FestivalEmperor Wudi of the Han Dynast

12、y directed special attention to this event. In 104 BC, he proclaimed it one of the most important celebrations.By the beginning of the Tang Dynasty, the lantern displays would last three days. The emperor also lifted the curfew （宵禁令）,allowing the people to enjoy the festival lanterns.In the Song Dyn

13、asty, the festival was celebrated for five days. Colorful glass and even jade were used to make lanterns, with figures from folk tales painted on the lanterns.The largest Lantern Festival celebration took place in the Ming Dynasty. Emperor Chengzu had the downtown area set aside as a center for disp
