As I do for every walk we take, I already had a route planned in my head. On this particular morning,
3、 my plan was to walk a route my family and I refer to as Barn Road Loop. Though my dogs and I had been in the Northern Neck two days and had already enjoyed four walks on the nature trails and throughout the neighborhood, we had yet to traverse Barn Road Loop. Today, I had decided, was the day.We co
4、mpleted the first half of the predetermined loop, but when we got to the road that would take us to Barn Road, Jack rebelled. He often does, having quite a mind of his own. When I tried to coax him into turning left, he locked eyes with me, planted his feet in a posture reminiscent of a stubborn mul
5、e pulling against his lead, and held his ground. Sadie stood by placidly, watching to see who would win this battle of wills.Although I was reluctant to alter the route to which I had already mentally committed, I gave in. Jack won. He often does. We werent in a hurry, after all, and we could still
6、walk Barn Road after this little detour.No sooner did I stop pulling his leash in the direction in which I had intended to go, relinquishing our walk to his will, than my triumphantly tail-wagging dog led Sadie and me down his own chosen path.When we got to where he was headed, I was so glad I had l
7、et him take the lead.He had taken us to The Point a peninsula of land where Cod Creek flows into the Potomac River, which eventually opens up into the Chesapeake Bay. We were rewarded for our detour with the absolute picture of peace. The morning was cloudy, but the clouds were starting to break, an
8、d their reflection shone like an impressionist painting in the water at our feet. There was no one else around, not even a car in the parking lot of the nearby clubhouse.It was just me, my dogs, the seabirds, and the rippled reflection of the sky in the river. Gratitude and serenity washed over me l
9、ike the lapping waves over the sand, and I realized that sometimes letting go letting someone else take the lead is the wisest decision one can make. I could have forged ahead with my own agenda, but in relinquishing my will to that of my stubborn dog, all three of us were rewarded. It is a moment I
