1、第二节 翻译的过程翻译的过程大体可分为理解、表达和校核三个阶段。一、理解阶段（一）确定词语在语境中的意义同样的词或词组，在不同的语言环境里，意义不同，例如：1.I never had much in seeing you.There was no love lost between us at any time.2.We grumble a little now and then,to be sure.But theres no love lost between us.我向来不大想看到你，咱们两人之间大概什么时候都不曾有过好感。（没有爱可失去，no love to lose）当然啦，我们有时

2、也免不了争论几句，但是我们还是相亲相爱。（没有失去爱，not lose love）3.The slums offered an ugly contrast to the classical grandeur of official Washington.贫民窟与辉煌的华盛顿官府建筑形成了很难看的对比。4.The baseball season opens this afternoon and I suspect that most of official Washington are out at the field,including the president and many of th

5、s not more a writer than a painter.2.He is no more a writer than a painter.与其说他是个作家，还不如说他是个画家。他既不是个作家，也不是个画家。3.He sees the book my way.Even if mine doesnt sell,his sure will.4.Stop selling me to him.对于这部分，他的看法同我一样。即使我的意见难以为人接受，他的意见必能服人。别在他面前替我说好话。5.In science,more than in any human institution,its n

9、n first name basis.Onbasis 意为在原则上，而不是在基础上史密斯将军和我父亲是直呼名字的知交。3.Keep your chin up.4.Sleep as sound as a log of wood.不是抬起头来，而是“不要失去勇气，振作起来。”不是睡得像段木头，而是“睡得很沉（香）。”（五）理解原文的深层结构1.She slept late yesterday.2.God is no respecter of persons.误译：她昨天睡得很晚。正译：她昨天起床很晚。误译：上帝不尊重任何人。正译：上帝对任何人都一律看待。3.Some nations possess

10、 little in the way of exportable commodities.误译：有些国家几乎没有什么出商品的办法。正译：有些国家几乎没有什么可供出口的商品。二、表达阶段（一）直译与意译直译（Literal Translation）就是指翻译时尽量保持原文的语言形式，包括用词、句子结构、比喻、形象、民族或地方色彩等等。一般来说，语法结构简单的句子宜用直译，如：This is a book.这是一本书。I am a student.我是学生。意译（Free Translation）则是指在两种语言表达方式差别较大的情况下，译者应立足于把原文的意义表达出来，而不拘泥于原文的语言形式，

11、包括用词、句子结构、比喻、形象、民族或地方色彩等。有些句子含义比较深远，就要采取意译的方法，比如海明威的作品The Old Man and Sea中有这样一句话：Someone asked the old man“How much did you suffer?”（你吃了多少苦？）“Plenty,”The old man said.一言难尽判断下列译文是直译还是意译：I was late for class yesterday.I had to open the door and go in before everybody.（摘自都德的最后一课）译文一：我只好在大家望着我的情况下推门进去。译

12、文二：我只得在众目睽睽下推门进去。译文三：没办法，我只好硬着头皮推门进去。译文一是客观的描述、直译的方法，忠实于形式，没有表达出惭愧的心情。译文二不符合说话人的身份。（语法学得不好）译文三充分表达了原文的内涵，采用意译的方法，忠实于内容。（二）正确处理直译与意译的关系一般说来，英语表达注重曲折婉转、倾向于简练和含蓄的陈述（understatement）。汉语则相对地倾向于直截了当的陈述，翻译这类句子时，则需视具体情况而定。When I want your opinion,Ill ask for it.You are late for the last time.直译：当我需要你的意见时，我会问

13、你的。意译：（因此）请你不要插嘴。直译：这是你最后一次迟到了。意译：（因为）你被解雇了。This film is a dramatic treatment of a threatening stoppage in a factory.硬译：这部影片是个戏剧性的处理，关于一场有威胁性的罢工，在一家工厂里。直译：这部影片是对于一家工厂里一场有威胁性的罢工的戏剧性处理。改译：这部影片用戏剧性的手法，表现了一家工厂里的一场罢工。（没有译威胁）意译：本片用戏剧性的手法，表现了一家工厂面临罢工威胁的情况。三、校核阶段校核定稿总之，翻译的过程中应做到：（1）理解原文要有上下求索的精神；（2）译成中文要有精益求精的精神；（3）对待文化反差要有不懂就问的精神。
