3、s previously,my son had been selected for a scholarship to attend the college of his choice because of his academic accomplishments and community service.Our entire family had been in a celebratory mode.We were so grateful for the news.It was such a wonderful achievement and relief to know we would
4、get financial assistance for his college education.So what had gone wrong?Why such a sad face and downcast eyes?I finally got the answer after a few hours of probing.I learned that my sons scholarship news had generated jealousy among his friends.Not only were these classmates unsupportive,but their
5、 comments reflected resentment that he was thinking about“going away”to college.Since he was“a nerd”and“so rich”now,they said he might as well go away,because he wasnt welcome with them anymore.As his mother,I felt I should know how to make everything better,but I didnt.The mocking and bullying didn
6、t make sense to me.I kept wondering how something so positive had been twisted into something so negative.I searched for words of comfort,but nothing I said helped my son.When the scholarship had first been announced,my sons school was as excited and proud as we were.The award reflected positively o
7、n the curriculum,teachers,and staff.The school had held a ceremony for the announcement.The news had been printed in the school paper,and a news release was sent to the media.I felt it must have been that publicity that triggered the recent comments and,in the ensuing days,the negative rhetoric just
8、 kept coming.For the first time in his life,my son did not want to go to school.He began saying he was not even sure he wanted to go to college.Nothing I said or did made any difference.Every day,he seemed more dispirited and downhearted.His sadness hung like a gray cloud over our whole family.Nothi
9、ng his teachers said had much impact either.Both his counselor and his principal offered words of encouragement,but there was not any change.The slump in his shoulders and the sadness in his eyes remained.The taunts from his peers also kept coming.After a few weeks,I felt my son was becoming serious
10、ly depressed.His world was crumbling.When he announced that he wanted to give up the scholarship,I knew something had to be done.I decided to go up one more rung on the academic ladder and take him to visit the superintendent of schools.I didnt know the superintendent,having encountered him only at
11、a few academic functions and community events,but no one else in the school system had been able to change my sons outlook.I was desperate.The superintendents office was in a separate administrative building,removed from the high-school campus.When we arrived,it was hard not to be impressed by the i
12、mposing and impressive surroundings.It was a very professional,successful atmosphere,and I felt fortunate this busy man had agreed to see us.Our initial interaction centered around introductions,school activities,and congratulations on my sons scholarship.The superintendent,however,seemed to sense w
13、hat was wrong and why we were there.He began to address my son directly and maintain eye contact only with him.They talked about the merits of education,how it was hard to change ones surroundings,and the benefits of new challenges.I cant recall his exact words,but it was something along the lines o
14、f the following:“Whenever you decide to grow a little and extend yourself above the norm,there is always a danger you wont be the same.Its like the trees in the forest.When one tree decides to grow taller than all rest,that tree is most likely to get hit by lightning.Its a chance you take.When peopl
15、e are different,it seems like theyre more likely to be attacked for those differences.I know this because when I was a teacher,I had no problems.I fit in with all the other teachers with whom I worked.I was surrounded by colleagues and friends.I wanted to be a principal,however,and when I achieved t
16、hat goal,I found some of my colleagues and friends resented my advancement.”I remember wondering where he was going with this,but I noticed my son was sitting up in his chair and listening intently.He was obviously interested in this mans perspective,so the superintendent went on.“When I decided to
17、become the superintendent of all the schools in the system,it was even worse.I remember the resentment the lack of encouragement.I know what youre feeling,but you cant let those feelings keep you from your goals because Ill tell you a secret.You know those trees I mentioned,well,when you do grow tal
18、ler,and you rise above all the other trees in the forest,you realize there is so much more to see.Your view is better than ever.You can see the sky,the stars,and everything else beyond your little local forest.Once you see whats out there,you realize you cant go back.Youve seen it,and youre not the
19、same.You want to grow taller and extend yourself even further because you want to see more.You want to do more.Dont be afraid to grow,son.In the long run,you wont regret it.I never have.”“When you do grow taller,and you rise above all the other trees in the forest,you realize there is so much more t
20、o see.”Well,I dont know if it was him,his words,the office,or the trees in the forest,but my son finally smiled.He shook hands with the superintendent,stood up a little taller,and,within a few days,returned to the bright,smiling,effervescent boy wed always known.In the weeks that followed,I tried to
