2、 and in 1937 onthe row.As of 20XX,a Harris poll found it to be the second favorite bookof American readers,just behind the Bible.More than 30 million copieshave been printed worldwide.The sales of Margaret Mitchells novel inthe summer of 1936,at the virtually unprecedented price of three dollars,rea
3、ched about one million by the end of December.Because it was releasedin the era of the Great Depression and Mitchell worried the high$3.00price would ruin its chance for success.Actually the book was a bestsellerby the time reviews began to appear in national magazines.HerschelBrickell,a critic for
4、the New York Evening Post,praised Mitchell forthe way she tosses out the window all the thousands of technical tricksour novelists have been playing with for the past twenty years.Onecriticism by literary scholar Patricia Yaeger,leveled at Gone with theWind,is for its portrayal of African Americans

10、.Students should be told that Gonewith the Wind presents the wrong view of slavery,Loewen states.Besides,the main complaint was that the racial slur nigger appears repeatedlyin the novel.In the same complaint were several other books:The Niggerof the Narcissus,Uncle Toms Cabin,and The Adventures of
