7、etti.On October 13, 1985, Austin police were called to investigate an assault on a victim who was later identified as Antonetti. At about 5:15 a.m., Antonettis roommate said she found her attacked and on the couch, bleeding from her head. Police said EMS transported Antonetti to the hospital, where

8、she died 18 days later from head injuries resulting from the attack.The initial investigation went cold after authorities said they were unable to charge a suspect in this case. However, the case was re-examined in 2007 by the Cold Case Unit. In the examination, police said they followed up on an an

9、onymous tip that was received that year.The 2007 tip produced more leads, which ultimately led to the charge of one of Antonettis ex-boyfriends. Some 23 years later, the case was presented to a grand jury on June 10, and resulted in a charge for first-degree murder against Dennis Davis.Though Davis

10、was previously interviewed at the time of the murder, he was never listed as a suspect. 11、toryThe traditional elements of the detective story are: (1) the seemingly perfect crime; (2) the wrongly accused suspect at whom circumstantial evidence points; (3) the bungling (搞得一团糟) of dim-witted police; (4) the greater powers of observation and superior mind of the detective; and (5) the start

12、ling and unexpected denouement, in which the detective reveals how the identity of the culprit was ascertained. Detective stories frequently operate on the principle that superficially convincing evidence is ultimately irrelevant. Usually it is also axiomatic that the clues from which a logical solu

13、tion to the problem can be reached be fairly presented to the reader at exactly the same time that the sleuth (侦探) receives them and that the sleuth deduce the solution to the puzzle from a logical interpretation of these clues. The first detective story was The Murders in the Rue Morgue by Edgar Al

14、lan Poe, published in April 1841. The profession of detective had come into being only a few decades earlier, and Poe is generally thought to have been influenced by the Mmoires (182829) of Franois-Eugne Vidocq, who in 1817 founded the worlds first detective bureau, in Paris. Poes fictional French d

15、etective, C. Auguste Dupin, appeared in two other stories, The Mystery of Marie Roget (1845) and The Purloined Letter (1845). The detective story soon expanded to novel length. The introduction of the mass-produced paperback book in the late 1930s made detective-story writers wealthy, among them the

16、 Americans Erle Stanley Gardner, whose criminal lawyer Perry Mason unraveled crimes in court, Rex Stout, with his fat, orchid-raising detective Nero Wolfe and his urbane assistant Archie Goodwin, and Frances and Richard Lockridge, with another bright married couple, Mr. and Mrs. North. In France, Ge

17、orges Simenon produced novel after novel at a rapid-fire pace, making his hero, Inspector Maigret, one of the best-known detectives since Sherlock Holmes. Other writers who carried out the tradition of Holmes or broke new ground included Nicholas Blake (pseudonym of the poet C. Day-Lewis), Michael I

18、nnes, Dame Ngaio Marsh, Josephine Tey, Carter Dickson (John Dickson Carr), and P. D. James. After 1945, writers such as John Le Carr adapted the detective-story format to the increasingly popular spy novel. The Mystery Writers of America, a professional organization founded in 1945 to elevate the st

19、andards of mystery writing, including the detective story, has exerted an important influence through its annual Edgar Allan Poe Awards for excellence. 2. Identical twinsIdentical twins develop from a single egg/sperm combination that splits a few days after conception. Their DNA originates from a s

20、ingle source, thus their genetic makeup is the same and the characteristics that are determined by genetics will be similar. A picture was shown on the screen, identified by the fingerprint. Lindsey looked at the photo and went int

27、o shock because it was her or her twin sister Sara being accused of the robberies. Lindsey and Sara were identical twin sisters and their personalities were the only key to telling one from the other. Lindsey was quiet and conservative, while Sara enjoyed partying with her friends. Sara was killed l

28、ast year in a car accident. She was hit by a drunk driver and died instantly, before the paramedics arrived on the scene. 3 Furthermore, Lindsey had been getting these strange dreams recently at night, in which she was the perpetrator. Some dreams involved her robbing an elderly couple in broad dayl

29、ight of their vehicle and expensive jewels. Other dreams involved her torturing and burning an old man on his chest and face with an iron pipe as he was tied to his bed in his home. Lindsey was unclear as to why she was having these images, nor did she know where these crimes had taken place. She re

30、played the broadcast message in her mind and wondered if her images and the robberies had any connection. 4 Hello, Mom, did you see the picture of me or Sara on the news a few minutes ago? Lindsey asked in a slow tone of voice. 5 Yes, honey, why is your photo on the news? 6 Its not me, Mom. Its Sara

31、. Ive never lived nor stayed in Portland, Oregon. 7 Lindsey hung up the phone before her mom could say another word. She realized that an extensive search on her part was going to be required to remove herself from the case. Moreover, she was going to have to locate the place Sara was living in four

32、 years ago around the time of the crimes. Lindsey drove over to Saras home in search of anything left behind linking her with the Portland area. Her home was still the same, because their mom kept it after Sara passed away. Lindsey entered the living room, the dining room, and the kitchen. The livin

33、g room looked very clean. Lindsey was with Sara when she bought the home and it seemed weird walking back into the home without her sister around. Lindsey wasnt surprised at the neatness and cleanness of the rooms. She looked shocked as she entered the bathroom, which was a mess with trash on the ti

34、led floor and a dirt ring around the tub. Next, Lindsey walked into her sisters bedroom and saw her bras and panties thrown on the bed and floor, with an unplugged TV sitting by her water bed. Lindsey proceeded back into the kitchen and found Saras address book on the counter. She found three number

35、s with Oregon area codes, which were for two female friends and an ex-boyfriend named Johnny. 8 Lindsey took a chance and spoke with both women, who agreed to meet with Lindsey the following day at their homes once she arrived. The following day, Lindsey boarded the first flight out to Portland and

36、arrived at a hotel near the airport. Once she checked in she immediately called both women to confirm the meeting for that afternoon. Lindsey took a cab over to the first young womans home and spoke with her for about an hour, and then she left and went to the other womans home. She was given pictur

37、es and took notes on some of their conversations. Lindsey took a cab out into town and did some shopping and sightseeing for a few hours. Later, she returned to the hotel and rested for the meeting with Johnny the next day. She arrived at the restaurant near the hotel the next morning. Lindsey was t

38、here 15 minutes early to gather her thoughts and to prepare herself for the initial conversation with Johnny. A young man walked into the restaurant, needing more sleep by the look on his face. His clothes looked worn and his sneakers were covered in mud, and his hair was all over his head. Lindsey

39、knew that this wasnt Johnny because he wasnt the type of guy that her sister was attracted to. 9 Nevertheless, the young man sat across from Lindsey at the table, introducing himself as Johnny. She was intrigued by his willingness to express his feelings and the relationship he had with Sara. He als

40、o spoke about the robberies, saying that Sara went with him on three of the four crimes. He mentioned that she hadnt been scared; she had taken it as a thrill. Johnny gave her a few pictures of him and Sara at his apartment when she lived in Portland. Lindsey noticed how he fumbled with the zipper o

41、n his coat for the majority of their conversation. Afterward, she and Johnny went in their separate directions as if they didnt know each other. Lindsey could see why her sister had stayed in the area for a long period of time. It was beautiful compared to their hometown of Churchland, where nothing

42、 ever happened. 10 Lindsey returned to her hotel room later that day to pack her things to return to Churchland the following morning. In addition, she was looking forward to going back home because she had her proof and had finished her investigation. The following day, she called her mom and gave

43、her the details of her trip; however, she couldnt help feeling her mom was hiding information from her tone on the phone. Early the next morning, Lindsey went to the police department to speak with someone in charge of the four-year-old case. She was escorted to two detectives in a small room, only

44、dimly lit. Lindsey was anxious, going ahead with the papers she had in her hands. Both men were intrigued by the extensive time, effort, and money Lindsey had put into clearing her name. 11 She was sure that she would be eliminated from the case due to the proof she handed to the detectives, not kno

45、wing the detectives would have a different story for her. She went on to tell the detectives that her twin sister Sara had been killed in a car accident the year before. 12 Your sister Sara is alive and your mother is with her downstairs with a police officer waiting to speak with us, replied Detect

46、ive Ames. 13 Youre lying to me! I was there and saw my sister in her coffin before she was buried. I helped pay for her tombstone, Lindsey answered in an angry tone of voice. She moved herself to another chair in the corner of the small room and put her head in her hands. A knock at the door and Sar

47、a and their mom walked into the room. Lindsey was shocked looking at her sister standing there, with a disturbed look on her face. She looked nice in a black pantsuit and her hair was draped around her face. Their mom wore a pair of blue jeans and a tan sweatshirt, and her hair was pulled back from

48、her face in a ponytail. Neither detective could believe that Sara had anything to do with the robberies that had taken place in Portland, Oregon. When Lindsey saw her sister and mom, she knew the detectives werent going to believe her story after all. She didnt understand how they couldnt believe th

49、at her sister had died when there had to be a report from the autopsy done after her death. Lindsey felt betrayed by her family and she knew that her instinct had been right when she felt that her mom was hiding information the previous day. Both women turned and looked at Lindsey with disappointment as if she had just made up the entire story. Lindsey knew very well that the detectives wanted to
