13、ederalanti-trustlawssomembercollegescandiscusshowtheycouldjointlyreducemeritaid,“Thisisamerry-go-roundthatsgoingveryfast,andnoneoftheinstitutionsbelievetheycansustaintherisksoftryingtobreakawaybythemselves.Acomplicatingfactoristhatmeritaidhasbecomesopopularwithmiddle-incomefamilies,whodontqualifyfor
14、need-basedaid,thatmanyhavecometodependonit.And,astuitionscontinuetoincrease,thelinebetweenmeritandneedblurs.ThatsonereasonAlleghenyCollegedoesntplantodropmeritaidentirely.“Westillbelieveinrewardingsuperiorachievementsandknowthatthesetopstudentstrulyvaluethescholarship,saysScottFriedhoff,Alleghenysvi
