1、 Great smog of London was a lethal fog that covered the city of London for five days in 1952.It was caused by a combination of weather conditions and industrial pollution,that resulted in thousands of deaths and brought the city near a standstill.London fog“has a long lasting history in the city and

2、 it is known for its dense,yellow appearance and as such became a characteristic of the city by the 19th century.Polluted fogs were an issue as early as the 13th century,due to burning of coal.The situation only worsened as the city along with its industry continued to expand.These hazes werent natu

3、ral creations of the atmosphere.Water vapour would stick to particulates released by coal-burning factories,producing dark and heavy clouds that impaired visibility.This kind of fog later became known as smog.Air pollution reached its breaking point in the 19th century with the an increase in the po

4、pulation of the metropolis as well as the growing rate of the Industrial Revolution.By that time,the fogs of London could last a week and despite the deterioration of public health,little was done to check the smog,given the number of jobs that new industry provided.Later,during the 20th century,the

5、 fog of London had become more infrequent,as the factories were relocated outside the city.However,on December 5,1952,an anticyclone settled over London,a high-pressure system that caused cold air to be trapped below the warm air higher up.The emissions of factories and domestic furnaces couldnt be

6、released into the atmosphere and remained near ground level.The result was the worst pollution based fog in the citys history.Although the fog lasted five days,its severity wasnt known until the registrar general published the number of fatalities a few weeks later,which amounted to about 4000.The e

7、ffects of the lethal fog were long-lasting and many people died months later as a result of exposure.It is estimated that the number of deaths in total was about 12000.After the event of 1952,Londons air pollution became undeniable.British government ultimately passed the Clean Air Act four years la

8、ter,in 1956,as a direct response to the lethal fog.The Act established smoke-free areas throughout the city and restricted the burning of coal in domestic as well as in industrial furnaces.Though the change was slow and gradual,the Clean Air Act is generally considered a milestone in the history of
