I really wish I could read some funny stories . 我真希望能读点有趣的故事。wish意为“想要，需要，渴望，希望，但愿”，后接名词性从句，从句中的动词用虚拟语气形式。eg .I wish I could fly like a bird . 我希望我能像小鸟一样飞翔。注意：hope和wish表示

2、“想”，“希望”，都可接不定式作宾语，而不可接动名词。但：（1）wish + sb. to do sth表示命令；hope无此用法（2）hope后不能直接跟名词作宾语，可跟for + 名词，表示可以实现的“希望”；wish虽也跟for + 名词，但表示难以实现的“愿望”。eg . I hope for success . 我希望成功。I wish for a car . 我很想（得到）一辆小汽车。（3）hope和wish都可跟that从句，但hope that从句表示“希望”；wish that从句表示“愿望”。且从句动词用虚拟语气。eg .I hope you will be better

3、soon . 我希望你能很快好起来。I wish I were ten years younger . 我但愿自己能年轻十岁。（4）wish可跟双宾语；hope不能。eg .We wish you a happy New Year . 我们祝你新年快乐。2. Anything else ? 还读过（马克吐温的）其他作品吗？So does everyone else who has read it . 读过这本书的其他人也这样认为else作副词使用，表示“另外的，其他的”，常用于不定代词或疑问词之后。eg .I dont want to go . You can ask someone else

4、 . 我不想去，你可以问问别人。The book is not on the table ; Where else could it be ? 书不在桌子上，还能在哪儿呢？3. Life to him seemed nothing but heavy work . 生活对他来讲除去沉重的工作别无他物。（1）注意巩固seem的用法： seem to do seem（to be）+ adj. / n. It seems / seemed that （2）but常与否定代词nobody，nothing，nowhere等连用，意为“除去，除以外”。eg .This bike has been noth

5、ing but trouble ! 这辆自行车除了添麻烦，什么用处都没有！At the party he knew nobody but Tom . 在聚会上，除了汤姆以外，其他人他都不认识。4. Sighing , he began to whitewash the fence but did not enjoy it . 他叹着气，开始粉刷那片篱笆，但他一点都不喜欢干。Sighing是动词-ing形式，在句中做状语，表示伴随情况或方式。eg .They were walking happily in the street , singing and laughing . 他们唱着、笑着、高

6、高兴兴地走在大街上。She sat at the desk reading a newspaper . 她坐在桌旁看报。5. She told me to mind my own business . 她让我不要多管闲事。mind ones own business意为“管好自己的事情”，“别管闲事”。eg .Mind your own business . 别管闲事。This has nothing to do with you . Would you please mind your own business ? 这与你无关，能不能少管闲事？6. The very thought of i

7、t burned him like fire . 这种想法使他像被火烧了一样地难受。句中的very用来加强语气，意为“正是那一个”。相当于right。eg.This is the very pen he used when he was writing the book .他写这本书时用的就是这支笔。She is the very person I am waiting for . 她就是我正在等的人。He was caught in the very act of stealing . 他正在偷东西时当场被抓获。The very thought of failing in the Engli

8、sh exam frightens me .想到英语考试（可能）不及格我就害怕。7. Tom went on whitewashing the fence , paying no attention to Ben . 汤姆没有理睬本，继续在粉刷篱笆。（1）go on doing 继续做同一件事go on to do继续做另外一件事另外，还有go on with sth.（继续某事）（2）paying no attention to在句中是现在分词做伴随状语，译为“没注意到”。eg .They paid no attention to the lecture just now . 刚才，他们并没

9、有认真听报告。You should pay more attention to your teacher in class .课上你应更专心听老师讲课。8. I guess there isnt one boy in a thousand , maybe two thousand , that can do it well .我猜想一千个男孩中，可能两千个男孩中都不一定有一个人能把这件事做好。one boy in a thousand译为“一千个孩子中有一个”，介词in在本句中，意为“每”，表示某一群人或事物之中。in还可以用out of代替。eg .Nine in ten students

11、”的意思，可以分开用，后面接名词或动词的-ing形式。eg .She has given the idea up . 她已经放弃了这一想法。He never gives up trying . 他从不放弃尝试。另外，give in表示“屈服”，“让步”。eg .The boy kept asking his mother for more sugars , and finally his mother gave in .这个小孩一直找他妈妈要糖，最后他妈妈还是给他了。give off是“散发”，“发出”的意思。eg .The sun gives off heat and light . 太阳散

12、发光和热。（2）happy与unhappy是一对反义词，un-是否定前缀，再如lucky与unlucky，able与unable，certain与uncertain等。10. Have you read anything by Mark Twain ? I want to read more by him .你读过马克吐温的作品吗？我想多读些他的作品。这两句话相当于：Have you read anything written by Mark Twain ? I want to read more written by him .by somebody = written by somebod
