9、ic for Unit 1.Predict from pictures or teacha key w ord.Ask the students to predict or guess the unit topic.Then ask Who is on duty?”.In this activ ity,teacher can ask:What day is it today?What sthe date today?What season is it?What s the w eather like?What s the temperature?A student ora pair of st
10、udents can talk about the day of the week and thedate.They can describe the current weather.KEY STEPSStep 1:Ask the class to discuss the questions in“ThinkAboutIt”.Step 2:Check to see if the students have previewed thereadingas required.Ask if they have any questionsconcerning the text.Encourage oth
11、er students to try toanswer the questions.Todetermine students,level of understanding,ask questions suchas:Where does the title of the reading“Higher,Faster,Stronger come from?Whats the Chinese word(s)for the Olympics?What do you know about the Olympics?Step 3:There are some new words in the reading
12、 whose meaningsyou may have to briefly explain or demonstrate to the studentsin order to smooth their way in listening to the audiotape andunderstanding the reading.Select one or two sentencescontaining key words or phrases and ask if anyone has figuredout the meaning.If a student replies correctly,
13、ask him or herto share the srategies used to puzzle out the meaning.Rememberto give lots of praise for a good try,even if it,s wrong.Here is a suggested list in different groups:Places:Greece,Athens,Sydney,Mexico City,Los AngelesTime:ancient,modern,BC(Before Christ),AD(AnnoDomini-in the year of the
14、Lord,or since Christ was bom)Medals:gold,silver,bronze Sports and events:race,sprint(a short race),long jumping,shootingStep 4:Play the audiotape.Have the class follow the audiotapewhile looking at the text.Step 5:Divide the class into smal1 groups.Have each groupdiscuss the history,sports and event
15、s,and famous athletes ofthe Olympics.Summarize the main information from thereading.Step 6:Have the class play a game to help them review sportsvocabulary that they learned in the elementary program.See“Games at the back of this teacher,s guide for instructionsfor playing?,Question Toss.Form two tea
16、ms and use the category .sports.Step 7:Come to Lets Do It.An alternative game is Charades.“Divide the class into several large groups.In each groupstudents will take turns miming a sports activity and the otherstudents will take turns guessing.Instruct the groups to choose a timekeeper and scorekeep
17、er andorganize the order in which they will play.(They may need todraw straws or use some method of dividing tasksfairly.)Answers should be specific and both give the name ofthe game and describe the action.CLASS CLOSINGBelow is the suggested homework for this lesson.Aim to givestudents about thirty
