4、 on Mauna Kea is nothing new.A small butvocal group of Hawaiians and environments have long viewed theirpresence as disrespect for sacred land and a painful reminder of theoccupation of what was once a sovereign nation.Some blame for the current controversy belongs to astronomers.Intheir eagerness t

5、o build bigger telescopes,they forgot that scienceis theonly way of understanding the world.They did not always prioritize theprotection of Mauna Keas fragile ecosystems or its holiness to theislands inhabitants.Hawaiian culture is not a relic of the past;it is aliving culture undergoing a renaissan

6、ce today.Yet science has a cultural history,too,with roots going back to thedawn of civilization.The same curiosity to find what lies beyond thehorizon that first brought early Polynesians to Hawaii s shores inspiresastronomers today to explore the heavens.Calls to disassemble alltelescopes on Mauna

7、 Kea or to ban future development there ignore thereality that astronomy and Hawaiian culture both seek to answer bigquestions about who we are,where we come from and where we aregoing.Perhaps that is why we explore the starry skies,as if answering aprimal calling to know ourselves and our true ance
