5、eflyone by one.The foreign festivals we are familiar with include:Christmas Day,Valentines Day,AprilFools Day,Carnival Festival(狂欢节),Easter(复活节),Thanksgiving Day,and All Saints Day(万圣节),of which Christmas is the most important and similar to the Chinese Spring Festival.2.Do you know why the Chinese
6、students become more and more interested in the foreignfestivals?Much to our surprise,however,the Chinese students have been showing more and moreenthusiasm for such festivals as Valentines Day,April Fools,Day,Thanksgiving Day andChristmas Day,popular in the West.There may be as many reasons for stu
7、dents to grow fonder of these foreign festivals,but,onthe whole,three major factors should call for our concern.First,it is the nature of young people toseek for novelty and individuality,which our open-door policy has made possible.Second,celebrating foreign festivals is believed to be the best way
8、 of escaping from reality,in which mostof the students are being subjected to all kinds of stress.And above everything else,it is a directproduct of more and more exchanges between our cultures and Western cultures.3.Ask students if they know the origin if Valentines Day.Valentines Day:Valentine was
9、 a priest in Rome at the time Christianity was a newreligion.The Emperor at that time,Claudius II,ordered the Roman soldiers not to marry orbecome engaged.Claudius believed that as married men,his soldiers would want to stay homewith their families rather than fight his wars.Valentine defied the Emp
10、erors decree and secretlymarried the young couples.He was eventually arrested,imprisoned,and put to death.Valentinewas beheaded on February 14th,the eve of the Roman holiday Lupercalia(牧神节).After hisdeath,Valentine was named a saint.As Rome became more Christian,the priests moved the springholiday f
11、rom the 15th of February to the 14th Valentines Day.4.Ask students to talk about the meaning of different flowers,then show them some beautifulpictures.Part Two:listen to a short passage carefully and prepare to answer some questions.Will a rose smell as sweet if it is grown in South America instead
12、 of in the United States?Withthe living costs in the U.S.going up constantly,the costs of love and devotion have also soared.The rose selling companies have turned overseas to bring in better,fresher,and cheaper roses inorder to cut down the cost of the gift of roses so the American buyers will not
13、switch to anothertype of flower in times of celebration.Now imported roses are sold across the entire country,andninety percent of the imported flowers come from Colombia and Ecuador.The lowered price ofroses is a blessing for the lovers but a great challenge for the domestic rose growers.l.Do you t
