8、e in the early mid1860s. A sickly child, Carver was unable to work in the fields, so he did gardening. He was left with many free hours to walk in the woods beginning his career with nature. He soon became known as the “Plant Doctor” and would help friends and neighbors manage sick plants.In 1890, C
9、arver began to study music and art at Simpson College. His artwork was on show at the 1893 Worlds Fair. Painting gave him the chance to combine his two loves art and nature. Yet it was his talents for gardening that took him in another direction in 1891. Carver became the first AfricanAmerican to at

He proved to be a firstclass student and upon graduation he became the schools first AfricanAmerican teacher.In 1896, he received an invitation from Tuskegee Normal and Industrial School in Tuskegee, Alabama. Upon arriving, he found that the school was short
11、 of money so Dr Carver had to equip his own lab. He and his students would search trash heaps (垃圾堆) for things to use. This proved that Dr Carver was well ahead of his time. In 1916, he published a research report on peanuts, which helped many farmers turn to peanuts as a cash crop and saved the eco
12、nomy of the South when it was destroyed by the cotton insects attack. Carver continued his research with the peanut. He went on to find many uses for the peanut. 16、 years, William Shakespeare (15641616) is still widely celebrated as a great crafter (工匠) of language and playwright (剧作家). But he was not the only great master of dramatic writing and he is certainly not the only writer to have left a lasting impact on theatre. While less known worldwide, Tang Xian
17、zu is considered Chinas greatest playwright and is highly admired in that country of ancient literary and dramatic traditions.Tang was born in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi Province, and worked as a government official until, in 1598 and aged 49, he retired to focus on writing. Unlike Shakespeares large
18、 body of plays and poems, Tang wrote only four major plays: The Purple Hairpin, A Dream under a Southern Bough, Dream of Handan and The Peony Pavilion widely considered to be his masterpiece. In the latter three, much of the story is told through dream sequences. Tang used these scenes to explore hu
19、man emotions in ways that challenged the feudal system of his time. It is a similar dream structure that we find in Shakespeares A Midsummer Nights Dream.Tang lived towards the end of the Ming Dynasty (13681644) and, similarly to Shakespeare, his lasting success was partly due to the growth of theat
20、re as an artistic practice during his lifetime. As in Shakespeares England, it became hugely popular in China, with public theatres opening in different cities and traveling performance groups becoming common. Theatrical audiences started to populate open public spaces, and theatre as a popular form
21、 of entertainment found its place outside palaces. However, unlike in Shakespeares England, there was hardly any mixing of the rich with commoners at theatrical events.During this time, the way in which playtexts were enjoyed, spread and performed also changed. Initially, Chinese dramas had an empha
22、sis on poetic language and were distributed in book form, to be read like novels. They were seldom, if ever, performed. However, from the mid16th century, kunqu opera, a form of musical drama, spread from southern China to become a symbol of Chinese culture.While Tang and Shakespeare lived a world a
