1、否 定(NEGATION)否 定(Negation)与 肯 定(Affirmative)相 对。英 语 中 的 否 定 结 构 形 式 多 样,有 部 分 否 定、全 部 否 定、几 乎 否 定、双 重 否 定 等。在 译 成 汉 语 时，有 时 要 将 否 定 结 构 译 成 肯 定 含 义，有 时 又 要 将 肯 定 结 构 译 成 否 定 含 义；有 时 在 英 语 中 否 定 主 语，译 成 汉 语 时 就 要 转 换 成 否 定 谓 语。诸 如 此 类 的 现 象 很 多，值 得 探 讨。一、常 用 否 定 表 示 法 1.部 分 否 定 1代 词 或 副 词 与 not搭 配 代

2、词 或 副 词 如 all,both,every,everybody,every day,everyone,anybody,many,everything,entirely,altogether,absolutely,wholly,completely,everywhere,always,often 等 与 not 搭 配 使 用 时，表 示 部 分 否 定，意 为“并 非 都 是，不 是 每 个 都 是”等。例 如：Both of them are not my brothers.他 们 两 个 不 全 是 我 的 兄 弟。(这 一 句 是 部 分 否 定，不 可 译 成“他 们 两 个 都

3、 不 是 我 的 兄 弟”，如 要 表 达 这 个 意 思，要 说：Neither of them is my brother.)All is not gold that glitters.闪 闪 发 光 物，未 必 皆 黄 金。=Not all is gold that glitters.Every man can not do it.不 是 每 个 人 都 能 做 这 件 事。=Not every man can do it.All are not friends that speak us fair.对 我 们 和 和 气 气 说 话 的 人 并 非 都 是 朋 友。I do not r

4、emember all these formulas.这 些 公 式 我 并 非 全 都 记 得。This kind of tree is not found everywhere.这 种 树 并 非 哪 里 都 能 找 到。Everyone can not answer this question.并 非 每 个 人 都 能 回 答 这 个 问 题。The rich are not always happy.富 人 未 必 总 是 幸 福 的。Every couple is not a pair.成 对 成 双 多，珠 联 璧 合 少。(=Not every coupleis a pair.

7、o to work every day.我 不 是 每 天 都 去 上 班。Not all men are honest.不 是 所 有 的 人 都 诚 实。Not all English people likefish and chips.并 不 是 所 有 英 国 人 都 喜 欢 炸 鱼 加 炸 土 豆 条。All is not lost that is in peril.身 陷 危 难 时，并 非 万 事 休。He didnt eat all the cake.他 并 没 有 把 所 有 的 蛋 糕 都 吃 完。All are not capable that are in high p

9、scientists are not geniuses.并 非 所 有 的 科 学 家 都 是 天 才。These rules dont apply to all cases.这 些 规 则 并 不 适 用 于 所 有 的 情 况。I dont know everything about him.对 他 的 情 况 我 并 不 都 了 解。She is not always excited.她 并 三 邑 总、是 兴 奋。I dont altogether agree withyou.我 并 不 完 全 同 意 你。It is not altogether bad.那 并 不 完 全 是 坏

10、事。I dont like both.并 非 两 个 我 都 喜 欢。He is not absolutely wrong.他 并 不 完 全 错。I dont wholly believe it.我 并 不 完 全 相 信 它。She is not entirely mistaken.她 并 没 有 完 全 弄 错。【提 示】all.not和 both.not有 时 可 以 表 示 全 部 否 定，这 时，句 中 一 般 有 情 态 动 词。例 如：All the difficulties cannot make him give up.没 有 什 么 困 难 能 够 使 他 放 弃。A l

11、l the money in the world wont make her hjippy.世 界 上 所 有 的 钱 也 不 能 使 她 幸 福。2aH,both,everybody 等 与 带 有 否 定 意 义 的 词（decline,fail,nothing 等）连 用，或 者 与 带 有 否 定 词 缀 的 词（dishonest,unh叩 p y等）连 用，表 示 全 部 否 定，意 为“都 不,全 不 例 如:A ll o f them were unhappy.他 们 都 不 幸 福。（=None o f them was happy.）Both girls disbeliev

12、e in his words.两 个 女 孩 都 不 相 信 他 的 话。A ll these politicians are dishonest.所 有 这 些 政 客 都 不 诚 实。A ll their attempts came to nothing.他 们 所 有 的 努 力 都 毫 无 结 果。not.aU和 not.anybody等 有 时 既 可 表 示 部 分 否 定，也 可 表 示 全 部 否 定。例 如：She wasnt listening all the time.她 一 直 没 有 注 意 听。（否 定 的 中 心 是 谓 语 wasntlistening）她 并

13、不 是 一 直 都 在 注 意 听。（否 定 的 中 心 是 allthe time）She doesnt lend her car to anybody.她 的 车 不 借 给 任 何 人。（降 调，全 部 否 定）她 的 车 不 是 任 何 人 都 给 借 的。（升 调，部 分 否 定）2 明 修 栈 道，暗 度 陈 仓 汉 语 有 句 成 语：“明 修 栈 道，暗 度 陈 仓”，指 的 是 一 种 虚 虚 实 实、声 东 击 西、使 人 莫 辨 真 相 的 战 术，表 现 了 虚 指 与 实 指、形 式 与 实 质 的 不 同。说 来 也 巧，英 语 语 言 中 的 否 定 结 构 也

14、往 往 具 有 这 种 形 与 实 不 符 的 现 象，形 式 上 否 定 的 是 A,但 实 际 意 义 上 否 定 的 却 是 B.等 等。这 种 否 定的 虚 实 移 位，往 往 造 成 歧 义，需 细 加 辨 别。(1)否 定 主 语，但 否 定 词 not在 形 式 上 往 往 否 定 谓 语，也 就 是 上 文 所 说 的“部 分 否 定”。全 称 代 词 all,both,everybody等 作 否 定 句 主 语 时，都 可 能 产 生 否 定 移 位，形 式 上 否 定 全 体，但 实 际 上 否 定 部 分，参 阅 上 文。再 如：Everybody can not en

15、joy the music.并 非 每 个 人 都 能 欣 赏 这 首 曲 子。(=Not everybody can enjoy the music.)否 定 表 语 和 宾 语，但 否 定 词 not在 形 式 上 往 往 否 定 谓 语。这 种 否 定 也 是 用 否 定 全 体 的 形 式 来 否 定 部 分,常 同 all,everyone等 连 用。例 如：I dont agree with all of you.我 并 不 完 全 同 意 你 们。(=1 agree with someof you.)I dont like both of the books.这 两 本 书 我

16、并 非 都 喜 欢。(=1 like not bothof them.)(只 喜 欢 其 中 的 一 本)The cloth does not feel very soft.这 布 摸 起 来 不 是 太 柔 软。(=The clothfeels not very soft.)(3)否 定 状 语，但 否 定 词 not在 形 式 上 往 往 否 定 谓 语。例 如：I did not do it for myself.我 做 那 件 事 并 非 为 了 自 己。(=1 did it not formyself.)He didnt shout to frighten you.他 大 声 喊 叫

17、 不 是 为 了 吓 唬 你。Henry doesnt inspire fear like his brother.亨 利 不 像 他 弟 弟 那 样 使 人 望 而 生 畏。The student did not sit there listening to theteacher.那 个 学 生 坐 在 那 里，并 没 有 听 老 师 讲 课。She didnt return the same person that she left.返 回 时，她 同 先 前 离 开 时 判 若 两 人。He has not come to the decision quickly.他 并 不 是 匆 忙

18、 做 出 决 定 的。(=He has come to the decision notquickly.)She didnt come to complain,but to solve theproblem.她 来 这 里 不 是 发 牢 骚 的，而 是 解 决 问 题 的。They did not go into the mountains to hunt animals,but to protect them.他 们 进 山 去 不 是 为 了 捕 杀 动 物，而 是 要 保 护 它 们。但 是，谓 语 中 的 否 定 词 not并 非 只 能 否 定 其 后 的 状 语，如 上 面 第

19、二 个 例 句 也 可 理 解 为 For myself,Idid not do it.(我 为 了 自 己，没 做 那 件 事。)为 避 免 歧 义，可 以 将 状 语 提 前，并 在 其 后 加 逗 号。如 果 是 遇 到 not.because句 型，若 否 定 主 句，可 将 because从 句 提 到 主 句 前，或 在 because从 句 前 加 逗 号 同 主 句 隔 开；若 否 定 从 句，可 在 because前 加 n o t,或 用 It is/was.that.结 构。在 口 语 中，否 定 主 句 时，主 句 谓 语 动 词 用 降 调；否 定 从 句 时、主 句

20、 谓 语 动 词 读 升 调。下 面 几 个 句 子 均 能 产 生 歧 义，试 加 以 分 析，并 调 整 句 子 结 构 以 排 除 歧 义。The poem is not found in this volume.She didnt come to the meeting by train.He didnt buy the picture because it was cheap.(4)happen,prove,pretend等 后 有 否 定 不 定 式 时，否 定 词 not往 往 移位 否 定 谓 语。例 如：She didnt happen to be present.她 当 时

21、 恰 巧 不 在 场。He didnt pretend to notice the misprint.他 假 装 没 注 意 到 那 个 印 刷 错 误。（5）在 not.and.结 构 中，and连 接 两 个 表 语、谓 语 动 词、状 语、定 语 或 宾 语，表 示 部 分 否 定，否 定 的 往 往 是 and后 的 部 分。例 如：The house is not big and comfortable.这 房 子 很 大，但 不 舒 适。He does not speak Russian and French.他 说 俄 语，但 不 说 法 语。Dont drink and dri

22、ve.不 要 酒 后 开 车。（喝 了 酒 就 不 要 开 车。）These are not cheap and wear-resistant rubbers.这 些 胶 鞋 价 格 便 宜，可 就 是 不 耐 穿。The man is not rich and kind.那 人 为 富 不 仁。She did not speak correctlyand clearly.她 说 得 正 确，但 不 够 清 楚。We cannot put on airs and make people like us.要 是 摆 架 子，别 人 就 不 会 喜 欢 我 们。He is not a bright

23、 and diligent boy.他 并 不 是 个 又 聪 明 又 勤 奋 的 孩 子。（他 是 个 聪 明 的 孩 子，但 不 勤 奋。）【提 示】在 古 雅 的 文 体 中，还 常 用“行 为 动 词+not”这 种 否 定 结 构。例 如：I know not what else she can do for you.我 不 知 道 她 还 能 为 你 做 什 么。（相 当 于 do not know）He doubted not but that she would regret someday.我 相 信 她 有 一 天 会 后 悔 的。（相 当 于 did not doubt）

24、2some与 not连 用 也 构 成 部 分 否 定。例 如：I dont like some of the exhibits.有 些 展 品 我 不 喜 欢。I dont like any of the exhibits.展 品 我 也 不 喜 欢。She didnt invite some of her colleagues.有 些 同 事 她 没 有 邀 请。She didnt invite any of her colleagues.她 的 同 事 她 一 个 也 没 有 邀 请。2.全 部 否 定 英 语 中 表 示 全 部 否 定 时 常 用 no,not,none,nobody

25、,nothing,nowhere,neither,never 等。例 如：None of my friends smoke.我 的 朋 友 都 不 抽 烟。Neither of the substances dissolves in water.这 两 种 物 质 都 不 溶 于 水。The book is nowhere to be found.那 本 书 哪 儿 也 找 不 到。No cigarette is completely harmless.香 烟 没 有 完 全 无 害 的。Nothing in the world is difficult for one who sets hi

26、s mind to it.世 上 无 难 事，只 怕 有 心 人。Never have we been daunted by difficulties.我 们 任 何 时 候 都 没 有 被 困 难 吓 倒 过。正 确 理 解 和 区 分 部 分 否 定 和 全 部 否 定 是 很 重 要 的，稍 一 疏 忽，就 会 出 现 译 文 上 的 错 误。比 较：I dont know anything about her.我 对 她 的 情 况 一 无 所 知。（全 部 否 定）I dont know everything about her.她 的 情 况 我 并 不 完 全 知 道。（部 分

27、否 定）None of the answers are right.所 有 的 答 案 都 不 正 确。（全 部 否 定）All the answers are not right.并 非 所 有 的 答 案 都 是 正 确 的。（部 分 否 定）Ido not know any of them.他 们 我 全 不 认 识。（全 部 否 定）I do not know all of them.他 们 我 并 非 个 个 都 认 识。（部 分 否 定）Not any student has read these magazines.没 有 任 何 学 生 读 过 这 些 杂 志。（全 部 否 定

28、）并 非 任 何 学 生 都 读 过 这 些 杂 志。（部 分 否 定）The horse cannot carry yourluggage and hers.这 匹 马 既 不 能 驮 你 的 行 李，也 不 能 驮 她 的 行 李。（全 部 否 定）这 匹 马 不 能 既 驮 你 的 行 李，又 驮 她 的 行 李。（部 分 否 定）Sam didnt sleep for eight hours.萨 姆 八 个 小 时 没 睡 觉。（全 部 否 定）萨 姆 没 有 睡 足 八 个 小 时。（部 分 否 定）3.双 重 否 定，意 义 肯 定 双 重 否 定 是 指 同 一 个 句 子 里

29、出 现 两 个 否 定 词，即 否 定 之 否 定。双 重 否 定 句 表 示 的 意 思 是 肯 定 的，通 常 比 肯 定 句 的 语 气 更 重 或 更 委 婉。译 成 汉 语 时 可 以 译 成 肯 定 形 式，也 可 以 保 持 双 重 否 定 的 形 式。双 重 否 定 表 示 法 多 种 多 样，主 要 有：lno/not+否 定 意 义 形 容 词；2no/not/never/few+否 定 意 义 动 词；3no/not/never+without+名 词/动 名 词；4 not+否 定 意 义 副 词；no+否 定 意 义 名 词；6can not.and n o te例

43、非 一 成 不 变，notunobjectionable 并 非 不 可 反 驳，not unlike 跟.一 样，等。4.几 乎 否 定 几 乎 否 定（又 称 半 否 定）表 示 整 个 句 子 的 意 思 接 近 于 否 定，常 用 的 词 有 little/few很 少/一 点 儿，barely仅 仅/几 乎 不，hardly几 乎 不/简 直 不，rarely很 少，scarcely几 乎 没 有/简 直 不，seldom不 常/很 少，等。例 如：This problem has been little studied.对 这 个 问 题 几 乎 还 没 有 研 究 过。He li

44、ttle realizes the danger he is in他 几 乎 还 没 有 意 识 到 所 面 临 的 危 险。I seldom get any sleep.我 几 乎 不 能 入 睡。件 事 cocely anpbody believesthot.几 乎 没 有 人 相 信 这 It is hardly right.这 几 乎 是 不 对 的。Little remains to be said.简 直 没 有 什 么 可 说 的 了。Hardly a day goes bywhen I dont think of h e r.几 乎 没 有 一 天 我 不 想 她。Her vo

46、that country.他 们 难 得 到 那 个 国 家 去 旅 行。The manuscript has few,if any,misspellings.这 部 手 稿 的 拼 写 错 误 即 使 有 也 是 极 少 的。5.形 式 否 定，意 义 肯 定 英 语 中 有 些 形 式 上 否 定 而 内 容 含 义 却 是 肯 定 的 结 构，译 成 汉 语 时 不 能 拘 泥 于 原 文 表 层 结 构 的 否 定，要 忠 实 于 原 文 含 义，即 译 出 此 类 否 定 结 构 的 肯 定 含 义。lcannot.too意 为“越 越，非 常，无 论 怎 样 也 不 过 分”，相
