2、ys musicin our house.It shaped us,comforted us,and gaveus a way to express feelings that might otherwisehave gone unspoken.After Dean became a father,we learned that hisoldest son was on the autism spectrum(自闭症).Mynephew Dj did not handle social situation well,andsometimes even for him to speak alou
3、d outside thefamily was a struggle.He worked very hard toovercome his fears,so much so that the year hewas eight,he decided he wanted to be part of theChristmas music program with the other children inhis Sunday school class.The part he had beenoffered was one that required him to sing a verse allon
4、 his own-a solo.My brother carefully explained to him that thiswould mean singing in front of the audience;therewould be no one singing with him.Dj considered thisvery carefully.After a couple of days,he decidedthat he would accept the part.He explained to usthat he believed he could do it because i
5、t was a veryspecial occasion,and he would practice until he wasas perfect as he could be.He said he knew hisdaddy would help him to be the best singer possible.For over a month,he and his father practicedtogether.Every evening would find them lockedaway in the music room,my brother on guitar,andmy n
6、ephews small voice coming from somewheredeep down inside his little body.He gainedconfidence,and when the day of the concert arrived,he was certain all would go well.My brother waitedbackstage,giving Dj double thumbs-up,and hecame out to sit with the rest of the family to watchand take photos.When i

15、s voice was low butmagnetic and pleasant,which quickly caught Djsattention.Father and sons eyes met in the air.Almost miraculously,the previously deflated boysuddenly became re-energized and quickly joinedhis fathers melodic lyrics.As their singingconcluded,thunderous applause and cheers filledthe auditorium.Once off the stage,Dj threw hisarms around Dean under our misty stares.Ofcourse,no words needed to be spoken.Musicbonded the father and son,allowing them to expressfeelings that might otherwise have gone unspoken.
