4、he engine,the wheels need to be disconnected from the engine somehow.The clutch allows us to smoothly engage a spinning engine to a non-spinning transmission by controlling the slippage between them.vA clutch works because of friction between a clutch plate and a flywheel.The clutch is a device that

5、 lets you connect and disconnect the engine and the transmission.When you push in the clutch pedal,the engine and the transmission are disconnected so the engine can run even if the car is standing still.When you release the clutch pedal,the engine and the input shaft are directly connected to one a

9、y to disconnect the engine from the transmission system without depressing the clutch pedal for a long time.It enables the vehicle to be reversed.vA gearbox has many shafts and gears.The common problems with gearbox include the difficulty in engaging gears,jumping out of gear,noisy gear mesh and oil

10、 leaks.You should look for the reasons and eliminate the problems.vThe diagram shows a very simple two-speed transmission in neutral.Lets look at each of the parts in this diagram to understand how they fit together:vThe input shaft comes from the engine through the clutch.The input shaft and the ge

11、ar on it are connected as a single unit.vInter-mediate shaft are also connected as a single piece,so all of the gears on the inter-mediate shaft and the inter-mediate shaft itself spin as one unit.The input shaft and the inter-mediate shaft are directly connected through their meshed gears so that i

12、f the input shaft is spinning,so is the inter-mediate shaft.In this way,the inter-mediate shaft receives its power directly from the engine whenever the clutch is engaged.vThe gears 1 ride on bearings，so they spin on the output shaft.If the engine is off but the car is coasting,the output shaft can

17、sition to use when you start your engine because your vehicle cant move easily.vR(Reverse)：Use this gear to back up.vN(Neutral)：In this position，your engine doesnt connect with the wheels.To restart when youre already moving,use N only.Also,use N when your vehicle is being towed.vD(Drive)：This posit

18、ion is for normal driving,at all speeds,in most street and highway situation.v2(Second)：This position gives you more power but lower fuel economy.You can use 2 on hills.It can help control your speed as you go down steep mountain roads.v1(First)：This position gives you even more power(but lower fuel

21、d that the inside wheels travel a shorter distance than the outside wheels.Since speed is equal to the distance traveled divided by the time it takes to go that distance,the wheels that travel a shorter distance travel at a lower speed.Also note that the front wheels travel a different distance than

22、 the rear wheels.vFor the non-driven wheels on your car，the front wheels on a rear-wheel drive car,the back wheels on a front-wheel drive car，this is not an issue.There is no connection between them,so they spin independently.But the driven wheels are linked together so that a single engine and tran

23、smission can turn both wheels.If your car did not have a differential,the wheels would have to be locked together,forced to spin at the same speed.This would make turning difficult and hard on your car.or the car to be able to turn,one tire would have to slip.With modern tires and concrete roads,a g

28、minology.vFour-wheel drive：Usually,when carmakers say that a car has four-wheel drive,they are referring to a part-time system.For reasons well explore later in this article,these systems are meant only for use in low-traction conditions,such as off-road or on snow or ice.v All-wheel drive：These sys

33、 tire.It supports the weight of a car and distributes it over the road surface.It also transfers the force in every direction between the road and the auto body,which makes the car move.vA pneumatic tire consists of the tire,the tire tube and the tube protector.It can be classified as diagonal tires

34、 and radial tires.A valve core is installed on the tube to inflate and deflate the tire.vYou should always examine hubs,rims and tires thoroughly to keep them in a sound condition.If a wheel or a tire is damaged,remove the valve core to deflate the tire before removing the wheel from the vehicle.Another skill you should acquire is the tire rotation,which can reduce the wear of the tire and extend its serviceable life.
