So it is high time that we improved our reading comprehension. This article is going to talk about four aspe

Further more, in order to get the main points, we should select relevant details to support the main idea, and recognize the relationship of ideas in the passage. In addition, we can also get som
、ething useful from the materials we have read. From what I have presented, it is not difficult to see that how important the role of reading plays in our daily life.1. Four major problems in College English ReadingAs a student, reading is such a thing that we cant be more familiar, especially for co
、llege student as English majors. We have just finished an initial test in our career of learning EnglishCET4, in which college reading comprehension is one of the crucial parts. It commands that we should accomplish 3 to 4 passages within 25 minutes. There are 4 major problems in my reading comprehe
、nsion and maybe in most college students.1.1 Strange words are always being the obstacle when we are reading.Words and expressions which the student does not know obviously present a problem. Some college students are so disturbed by unfamiliar vocabulary that their comprehension of the whole passag
、e suffers. Once seeing them, we have no mood in reading any more. In this case, its hard for us to catch the main idea.1.2 Tight time constraints to our ability to answer. In examination, I always read the paragraph word by word in order to know the meaning of each word. When I get the main point, th
、ere is no time for me to answer the question. “Given enough time, I can get all the correct answers.” Which is often said by us students presents it vividly.1.3 Useful information cannot be got within a limited time.Almost all of us have the hobbit of reading all the passages sentence by sentence. N
、ot until having comprehended completely do we start to see and do the exercises behind.1.4 Looking back to the paragraphs or sentences is a commonplace. The average college student reading at 250 words per minute regress or rereads about 20 times per page. Rereading words and phrases is a habit which
、 will slow our reading speed down to a snails space. Maybe it because of low concentration or maybe its complicated structure or maybe it is just a bad habit, etc.2. Ways of improving College English ComprehensionAs we all know, vocabulary to learning is what brick to building house. Learning Englis
、h is not an exception of this rule. Strange words stop us from reading efficiently and do bad effect on our passion to go on reading. On the contrast, wealthy vocabulary is the basis of listening clearly, speaking fluently and writing smoothly. A bound of scientific investigations prove that the lac
、k of vocabulary is the key cause of difficulty in English studying. In a word, vocabulary plays an important role in college reading comprehension. It relates directly to the reading speed and the reading accuracy. There are many ways of enlarging it. Interests, associations and calcifications are g
、ood choices. Perhaps the most impressive reason for vocabulary development is that a good vocabulary and success are synonymous.1).A good vocabulary can be an economic advantage. An institution for testing peoples attitudes, the Human Engineering Laboratory, found that a good vocabulary is the only
、trait common to successful people. The Lab has found that the highest scores on vocabulary tests have been made by people getting the highest pay.2). A good vocabulary also means academic success. There is a direct link between verbal ability and scores on an intelligence or achievement test. It may
、 be unfair for someones intelligence to be judged on the basis of a verbal test. But students are still being judged this way. Many teachers think that the results of an IQ test and a vocabulary test will be about the same. And both predict success. According to A Guide Book for the Teaching of Read
、ing, in a vocabulary test with a score of 100, students who score 65-70 and up will likely be successful in college. Those scoring from 35 to 70 will probably have moderate success and will complete college. Those in the lowest third will probably be ones who are constantly in trouble academically,
、or who leave the campus before receiving a degree. The same book also notes, however, that if “these low-scoring students apply themselves to improving their vocabulary, they will have less and less trouble in their college work.2.2 Improving Reading RateAfter solving the most basic and the hardest
、problem, there comes another questionthe reading speed or the reading rate, which is measured in words per minute (WPM). It is the main standard of ones reading level. Both the teaching outline for English majors and nonEnglish majors make specific requirements on reading speed for students in every
、 degree. For example, CET4 requires students reading at the speed of 80 to 100 WPM, reaching the accuracy of 70%. So, when training the comprehension and the accuracy of reading, we should also take great notice of improving our reading speed. Just as I have said, it is important to exert all our ab
、ilities during a limited time. Some people think that reading at a high speed affects the accuracy of the comprehension for the text. Actually, it is a misunderstanding caused by the traditional reading teaching schemes, which valued the reading accuracy overly and ignore the improvement of reading
、speed. The accomplishment of a reading task within an appropriate time frame and with appropriate comprehension, which means reading efficiency, is what we are perusing now. The fast readers are the people who can read in such a level. The improvement of reading speed is not an easy thing to do. As
、the proverb says: “practice makes perfect”, critical trainings under scientific instructions are necessary.Speed reading without adequate or appropriate comprehension is not what we want. Neither do taking ten hours to read a twenty page chapter. To get the useful information and the main idea of th
、e passage with least time, it is necessary to develop several techniques that will help with comprehension and read faster.1). Reading the passage according to your purpose. If you want to seize the main idea of the passage, you can read several sentences at the beginning or at the end of the articl
、e. If you are looking for the answers of some specific questions, you can first scanning the text and find the special lines relating to your questions and then read them intensively, etc. 2). Reading different materials with suitable ways. Do you read the newspaper in the same way and the same spee
、d that you read a text book? Do you read poetry in the same way and at the same speed that you read an article in a magazine? If you say yes, unfortunately, that means you are a poor reader. The ability to adjust the reading rate and methods to suit the type of material to be read and the purpose fo
、r reading or reading flexibility is very important. Not only for the improvement of reading speed, but also for the improvement of reading skills. With this ability, we can save a lot of time that may be wasted on unimportant information. These techniques need practicing whenever we are reading.3).
、Developing a wider eye-span. This will help you read more than one word than one word at a glance. Since written material is less meaningful if read word by word, this will help you learn to read by phrases or through units. 4).The ability of prediction.Prediction begins from the moment you read the
、 title and from expectations of what the book is likely to contain. Even if the predictions are contradicted, they are useful because they have started you thinking about the topic and made you actively involved. If you formulate your predictions as questions which you think the text many answer, you
、 are preparing yourself to read for a purpose: to see which of your questions are in fact dealt with and what answers are offered. If your reading is more purposeful you are likely to understand better.Naturally your predictions will not always correct. This does not matter at all as long as you rec
、ognize when they are wrong, and why. In fact mistaken predictions can tell you the sources of misunderstanding and help you to avoid certain false assumptions.Prediction is possible at a number of levels. From the title of a book you can know the topic and possibly something about the treatment. Fro
、m the beginning of a sentence, you can often predict how the sentence will end. Between these extremes, you can what will happen next in a story, or how a writer will present his argument, or what methods will be used to test a hypothesis.2.3 Increasing college reading skills Reading skills are very
、 important. Experts estimate that it is possible for any normal adult English speaker to read 1,000 words a minute (and more), with special training. Yet most students read only 300 words per minute. The following principles might be helpful for foreign students who wish to increase reading skill:1)
、.Always read faster than is comfortable. The faster your normal rate of reading becomes, the better your understanding will be. 2).While reading do not allow yourself to regress, but keep reading ahead in every sentence, even when you come across a new world. If some word, term, or phrase has cloude
、d your understanding, you should reread it only after you have read the entire paragraph through once. 3). Read selectively. As you read, focus your attention on the nouns, pronouns, and verbs, since these are the words that give meaning to what you have read. In effect, you should really read nouns
、, pronouns, and verbs and merely see the rest of the words in the sentence. Because the reading assignments in most college courses are very long, students should plan to read every day. If, however, they find that they cannot complete all of the assigned readings in the beginning, they should not p

Instead, they should ask their classmates how much they are reading and attempt to learn from them what to read first and attempt to learn from them what to read first and what to postpone until a later date.2.4 Taking interest in what you are reading. In spite of all these aspects mentioned a
、bove, there is one thing more that we should pay great attention to. That is the reading habit. Maybe youre asked to read something far out of your boundaries of interest, which often happens in schools. And yet, if you are not intrigued or absorbed by text, if you are not searching for an answer, y
、ou will simply tune out just as you would while watching a boring movie. Thus it is imperative that you learn how to get fully involved in what you are reading. As we all know, habit is not so easy for us to change once it have come into being, all we need to do is paying attention to them from now
、on at every time we are reading. As is known to all, good habits do us a lot of goods. So do good reading habits.3. The problems we should pay attention to College English Comprehension3.1 Focusing on what you are readingFor the time when you decide to hold that material in front of you, your mind m
、ust be free of distractions. Anything else that is causing your mind to give attention to it is drawing from your ability to concentrate and thus makes comprehending what you read a struggle. A focused mind is the primary key to good comprehension. 3.2. Adjusting psychology to grasp the rhythm of re
、adingJust as an athlete will loosen up and practice a bit before the big event. This helps you to get in the right rhythm before reading. Being in the right state is critical.3.3. Bad habits in reading.First is reading word by word, taking a single word as a unit rather than a sentence or a paragraph, which is also called eye span. It can be expressed as vocalization or sub vocalization. This kind of habit does great harm to reading speed and reading efficiency. For example, when we are doing the listening comprehension, we need to finish reading the questions and an
