3、ndays.I sometimesstay in bed until lunchtime.Last Sunday I got up very late.Ilooked out of the window.It was dark outside.What a day!I thought.Its raining again.Just then,the telephone rang.It was my aunt Lucy.Ive just arrived by train,she said.Fm coming to see y o u.But Im still having breakfast,I
4、said.What are you doing?she asked.Im having breakfast,I repeated.Dear me,she said.Do you always get up so late?It*sone oclock!?Lesson 3 Please send me a card 寄 张 明 信 片 Postcards always spoil my holidays.Last summer,I went toItaly.I visited museums and sat in public gardens.A friendlywaiter taught me
5、 a few words of Italian.Then he lent me abook.I read a few lines,but I did not understand a word.Every day I thought about postcards.My holidays passedquickly,but I did not send cards to my friends.On the last dayI made a big decision.I got up early and bought thirty-sevencards.I spent the whole day
6、 in my room,but I did not write asingle card!Lesson 4 An exciting trip 激 动 人 心 的 旅 行 I have just received a letter from my brother,Tim.He is inAustralia.He has been there for six months.Tim is anengineer.He is working for a big firm and he has alreadyvisited a great number of different places in Aus
7、tralia.He hasjust bought an Australian car and has gone to Alice Springs,asmall town in the centre of Australia.He will soon visitDarwin From there,he will fly to Perth.My brother has neverbeen abroad before,so he is finding this trip very exciting.Lesson 5 No wrong numbers 无 错 号 之 虞 Mr.James Scott
8、has a garage in Silbury and now he has justbought another garage in Pinhurst.Pinhurst is only five milesfrom Silbury,but Mr.Scott cannot get a telephone for his newgarage,so he has just bought twelve pigeons.Yesterday,apigeon carried the first message from Pinburst to Silbury.Thebird covered the dis
9、tance the first three minutes.Up to now,Mr.Scott has sent a great many requests for spare parts andother urgent messages from one garage to the other.In thisway,he has begun his own private f telephone,service.Lesson 6 Percy Buttons 珀 西 巴 顿 斯 I have just moved to a house in Bridge Street.Yesterday a
10、beggar knocked at my door.He asked me for a meal and aglass of beer.In return for this,the beggar stood on his headand sang songs.I gave him a meal.He ate the food and drankthe beer.Then he put a piece of cheese in his pocket and wentaway.Later a neighbour told me about him.Everybody knowshim.His na
11、me is Percy Buttons.He calls at every house in thestreet once a month and always asks for a meal and a glass ofbeer.Lesson 7 Too late 为 时 太 晚 The plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airportall morning.They were expecting a valuable parcel ofdiamonds from South Africa.A few hours earlie
12、r,someonehad told the police that thieves would try to steal the diamonds.When the plane arrived,some of the detectives were waitinginside the main building while others were waiting on theairfield.Two men took the parcel off the plane and carried itinto the Customs House.While two detectives were k
13、eepingguard at the door,two others opened the parcel.To theirsurprise,the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!Lesson 8 The best and the worst 最 好 的 和 最 差 的 Joe Sanders has the most beautiful garden in our town.Nearlyeverybody enters for The Nicest Garden Competition?eachyear,but Joe wins eve
14、ry time.Bill Frith*s garden is larger thanJoes.Bill works harder than Joe and grows more flowers andvegetables,but Joes garden is more interesting.He has madeneat paths and has built a wooden bridge over a pool.I likegardens too,but I do not like hard work.Every year I enter forthe garden competitio
15、n too,and I always win a little prize forthe worst garden in the town!Lesson 9 A cold welcome 冷 遇 On Wednesday evening,we went to the Town Hall.It was thelast day of the year and a large crowd of people had gatheredunder the Town Hall clock.It would strike twelve in twentyminutes time.Fifteen minute
16、s passed and then,at five totwelve,the clock stopped.The big minute hand did not move.We waited and waited,but nothing happened.Suddenlysomeone shouted,Its two minutes past twelve!The clockhas stopped!?I looked at my watch.It was true.The big clockrefused to welcome the New Year.At that moment,every
17、bodybegan to laugh and sing.Lesson 10 Not for j a z z不 适 于 演 奏 爵 士 乐 We have an old musical instrument.It is called a clavichord.Itwas made in Germany in 1681.Our clavichord is kept in theliving room.It has belonged to our family for a long time.The instrument was bought by my grandfather many years
18、ago.Recently it was damaged by a visitor.She tried to playjazz on it!She struck the keys too hard and two of the stringswere broken.My father was shocked.Now we are not allowedto touch i t.It is being repaired by a friend of my fathers.Lesson 11 One good turn deserves another 礼 尚 往 来 I was having di
19、nner at a restaurant when Tony Steele came in.Tony worked in a lawyers office years ago,but he is nowworking at a bank.He gets a good salary,but he alwaysborrows money from his friends and never pays it back.Tonysaw me and came and sat at the same table.He has neverborrowed money from me.While he wa
20、s eating,I asked himto lend me twenty pounds.To my surprise,he gave me themoney immediately.I have never borrowed any money fromyou,Tony said,so now you can pay for my dinner!Lesson 12 Goodbye and good luck 再 见,一 路 顺 风 Our neighbour,Captain Charles Alison,will sail fromPortsmouth tomorrow.Well meet
21、him at the harbour early inthe morning.He will be in his small boat,Topsail.Topsail is afamous little boat.It has sailed across the Atlantic many times.Captain Alison will set out at eight oclock,so well haveplenty of time.Well see his boat and then well say goodbye tohim.He will be away for two mon
22、ths.We are very proud ofhim.He will take part in an important race across the Atlantic.Lesson 13 The Greenwood Boys 绿 林 少 年 The Greenwood Boys are a group of pop singers.At present,they are visiting all parts of the country.They will be arrivinghere tomorrow.They will be coming by train and most of
23、theyoung people in the town will be meeting them at the station.Tomorrow evening they will be singing at the Workers*Club.The Greenwood Boys will be staying for five days.Duringthis time,they will give five performances.As usual,thepolice will have a difficult time.They will be trying to keeporder.I
24、t is always the same on these occasions.Lesson 14 Do you speak E n g lish?你 会 讲 英 语 吗?I had an amusing experience last year.After I had left a smallvillage in the south of France,I drove on to the next town.Onthe way,a young man waved to me.I stopped and he askedme for a lift.As soon as he had got i
25、nto the car,I said goodmorning to him in French and he replied in the samelanguage.Apart from a few words,I do not know any Frenchat all.Neither of us spoke during the journey.I had nearlyreached the town,when the young man suddenly said,veryslowly,Do you speak English?As I soon learnt,he wasEnglish
