8、sfrom Si I bury,but Mr.Scott cannot get a telephone for his newgarage,so he has just bought twelve pigeons.Yesterday,a pigeoncarried the first message from Pinhurst to Silbury.The bird coveredthe distance in three minutes.Up to now,Mr.Scott has sent a greatmany requests for spare parts and other urg

9、ent messages from ongarage to the other.In this way,he has begun his own privatetelephone service.6 Percy ButtonsI have just moved to a house in Bridge Street.Ybsterday a beggarknocked at my door.He asked me for a meal and a glass of beer.Inreturn for this,the beggar stood on his head and sang songs

10、.I gavehim a meal.He ate the food and drank the beer.Then he put a pieceof cheese in his pocket and went away.Later a neighbor told meabout him.Everybody knows him.His name is Percy Buttons.Hecalls at every house in the street once a month and always asks fora meal and a glass of beer.7 loo LateThe

11、plane was late and detectives were waiting at the airport allmorning.They were expecting a valuable parcel of diamonds fromSouth Africa.A few hours earlier,someone had told the police thatthieves would try to steal the diamonds.When the airplane arrived,some of the detectives were waiting inside the

12、 main building whileothers were waiting on the airfield.Two men took the parcel off theplane and carried it into the Customs House.While two detectiveswere keeping guard at the door,two others opened the parcel.Tbtheir surprise,the precious parcel was full of stones and sand!（不 可 8 The Best and the

14、eat path and has built awooden bridge over a pool.I like gardens too,but I do not like hardwork.Every year I enter for the garden competition too,and Ialways win a little prize for the worst garden in the town.9 A cold WelcomeOn Wednesday evening,we went to the Ibwn Hall.It was the lastday of the ye

15、ar and a large crowd of people had gathered under theTown Hall clock.It would strike twelve in twenty minutes time.Hfteen minutes passed and then,at five to twelve,the clockstopped.The big minute hand did not move.We waited and waited,but nothing happened.Suddenly someone shouted,Its twominutes past

16、 twelve!The clock has stopped!I looked at my watch.It was true.The big clock refused to welcome the New Vbar.At thatmoment,everybody began to laugh and sing.10 Not For JazzWe have an old musical instrument.It is called a clavichord.It wasmade in Germany in 1681.Our clavichord is kept in the living-r

17、oom.It has belonged to our family for a long time.The instrument wasbought by my grandfather many years ago.Recently it wasdamaged by a visitor.She tried to play jazz on it!She struck the keystoo hard and two of the strings were broken.My father was shocked.Now we are not allowed to touch it.It is b

18、eing repaired by a friendof my fathers.11 One Good Turn Deserves AnotherI was having dinner at a restaurant when Harry Steels came in.Harry worked in a lawyers office years ago,but he is now workingat a bank.He gets a good salary,but he always borrows moneyfrom his friends and never pays it back.Har

19、ry saw me and came andsat at the same table.He has never borrowed money from me.While he was eating,I asked him to lend me&2.Tb my surprise,hegave me the money immediately.1 have never borrowed moneyfrom you,Harry said,lso now you can pay for my dinner.,12 Goodbye and Good LuckOur neighbor,Captain C

21、his boatand then we shall say goodbye to him.He w川 be away for twomonths.We are very proud of him.He will take part in an importantrace across the Atlantic.13 The Greenwood BoysThe Greenwood Boys are a group of popular singers.At present,they are visiting all parts of the country.They will be arrivi

22、ng heretomorrow.They will be coming by train and most of the youngpeople in the town will be meeting them at the station.Tomorrowevening they will be singing at the Workers Club.The GreenwoodBoys will be staying for five days.During this time,they w 川 give fiveperformances.As usual,the police w川 hav

23、e a difficult time.Theywill be trying to keep order.It is always on these occasions.14 Do bu Speak English?I had an amusing experience last year.After I had left a small villagein the south of France,I drove on to the next town.On the way,ayoung man waved to me.I stopped and he asked me for a lift.A

24、ssoon as he had got into the car,I said good morning to him inFrench and he replied in the same language.Apart from a fewwords,I do not know any French at all.Neither of us spoke duringthe journey.I had nearly reached the town,when the young mansuddenly said,very slowly,lDo you speak English?As I so
