Abstract This study explores the application of skopos theory in the translation of children literature, through a

9、 contrastive study of two Chinese versions of Anne of Green Gables. Skopos theory provides a new perspective for translation study. It holds that translation methods or strategies should be determined by the intended function of the target text. Children literature, as a branch of literature, shares

10、 the common characteristics of literature while bears its own distinctive features. Guided by different purposes, the two translators iii the present case produce two versions that differ a lot in linguistic form, linguistic content and linguistic style. The big differences in linguistic form, lingu

11、istic content and linguistic style between the two Chinese versions of Anne of Green Gables offer a typical sample for translation criticism. From the perspective of skopos theory, this thesis probes into the reasons behind the different translation strategies and the effects brought by. The thesis

12、confirms the rationality for which the translators adopt different translation strategies for various purposes. The thesis holds that translation criticism should not be conducted merely according to prescriptive translation criteria and the factors such as translation purpose and translation strate

13、gies should also be taken into consideration, thus the translation criticism can be carried out from a broader angle. Based on skopos theory, with the cognitive features of children and the linguistic characteristics of childrens literature viewed, the thesis makes a detailed comparative study of di

14、fferences between the two Chinese versions of Anne of Green Gables from the following three aspects: linguistic form, linguistic content and linguistic style. After a detailed analysis, the author draws a conclusion that those differences are caused by different translation purposes, which lead to d

15、ifferent translation strategies adopted by translators， resulting in two versions different from each other in linguistic form, linguistic content and linguistic style. 16、研究开辟了新的角度，目的论认为翻 译的方法及策略应该由译文的目的决定。儿童文学作 为文学的一个分支，既 有一般文学的特点，又有其自身的显著特色。由于受到不同目的的驱使，该 案例中的两位译者译出了在语言形式，语言内容，语言风格差异较大的两个 译本。 儿童文学绿山墙的安妮的两个中文译本在语言形式和语言内容及语 言风格等方面存在的差异为翻译批评提供了典型样本。本文从功能派翻译理 论目的论的角度，对这两个中译本在翻译策略和接受效果两个方面产生差异 的原因作出思考，肯定了两译本译者为达到各自翻译目的所采用的方法的合 理性。本文认为，翻译批评不能单凭规范性的翻译标准来评价译本的优劣， 而应把翻译 目的、翻

25、ationale of the Study There are mainly two reasons for me to conduct this research. Firstly, the translation of childrens literature is very important. It has played a key role in the birth and development of Chinese modem children literature and has imposed great influence on Chinese children for a

26、 long time. Secondly, it is due to the lack of study on translation of childrens literature， which not only lacks the due attention in China but also lags far behind the study in western countries. China is a country with long and rich literary tradition. However, before entering modem society， chil

27、drens literature was extremely lacking. At that time， the spiritual food for children were merely some passages abridged and adapted from folk literature and adult literature which catered to the interest of children, such as “Monkeys rebellion against Heaven” from Jcmrwej； 如 ， and “Mo Chung fights

28、the tiger from Outlaws of Water Margin. It is generally agreed that modem Chinese children literature was bom during the May Fourth period in 1919. The May Fourth era was an era of ideological emancipation. People rejected all the old feudal reading materials for young readers but could not afford i

29、mmediately new appropriate books. Thus translation became the most necessary and the only possible means to provide timely spiritual food for Chinese children. Xia Li (夏历，2000:5) holds that most of the writers, when they were not in full preparation for the creation for children， actually started wi

30、th the translation of foreign childrens books. This quickened the development of childrens literature in China at that time, broadening the writers horizon and influencing their creation in some aspects” Nowadays， though Chinese childrens literature has scored notable 1 All the quotation from papers

At present, television, computer games and internet have posed a big challenge for both creation and reading of childrens literature all over the world. Besides， childrens lit

32、erature in China has its own difficulties. As Wang Quangen points out, authors and scholars of childrens literature in China are obviously short-handed. Very few universities in China have independent discipline of children literature in China, so children literature is studied under discipline of m

33、odem and contemporary Chinese literature as a tertiary discipline. The number of teachers who insist on the establishment of a course of childrens literature is less than 20”（ qtd.李红叶， 2002:58). The above shows that childrens literature has not attracted due attention in China, which means that tran

34、slation of foreign children literature is still essential, for it can not only serve as a supplement for Chinese childrens literature, but also provides a channel for the children to learn about the outside world. In a globalized world like today, there is no doubt that communication between childre

35、ns literature at home and abroad has been more frequent and active than it used to be. Therefore， translation of childrens literature will continue to play a significant role in the development of Chinese modem childrens literature and have great influence on Chinese children.
