2、mericans first and foremost. Today we give thanks for blessings that are all too rare in this world. The ability to spend time with the ones we love; to say what we want; to know that there are brave men and women defending our freedom around the globe; and to look our children in the eye and tell t
3、hem that, here in America, no dream is too big if theyre willing to work for it.Were also grateful that this country has always been home to Americans who see these blessings not simply as gifts to enjoy, but as opportunities to give back. Americans who believe we have a responsibility to look out f
4、or those less fortunate.Right now, as we prepare to gather around our dinner tables, there are families in the northeast who dont have that luxury. Many of them have lost everything to Hurricane Sandyhomes, possessions, even loved ones. And it will be a long time before life goes back to normal.But
5、in the midst of so much tragedy, there are also glimmers of hope. Over the last few weeks, weve seen FEMA personnel, National Guard and first responders working around the clock in hard-hit communities. Weve seen hospital workers using their lunch breaks to distribute supplies. Families offering up
6、extra bedrooms. The fire department advertising free hot showers. Buses full of volunteers coming from hundreds of miles away. Neighbors sharing whatever they havefood, water, electricityand saying again and again how lucky they are to have a roof over their heads.As Americans, we are a bold, genero
7、us, big-hearted people. When our brothers and sisters are in need, we roll up our sleeves and get to worknot for the recognition or the reward, but because its the right thing to do. And because here in America, we rise or fall together, as one nation and one people. Thats something to be grateful f
8、ortoday and every day.So to all the Americans doing your part to make our world a better placeit is my privilege to serve as your President. 15、ity and intelligence can make the world a better place.For as long as I can remember, Ive loved learning new things and solving problems. So when I sat down at a computer for the first time in seventh grade, I was hooked. It changed my life.When my friend Paul Allen and I stared Microsoft 30 years a
16、go, we had a vision of a computer on every desk and in every home, which probably sounded a little too optimistic at a time when most computers were the size of refrigerators. But we believe that personal computer would change the world. And they have.And after 30 years, Im still as inspired by comp
17、uters as I was back in seventh grade.I believe that computers are the most incredible tool we can use to feed our curiosity and inventivenessto help us solve problems that even the smartest people couldnt solve on their own. Computer have transformed how we learn, giving kids everywhere a window int

Theyre helping us build communities around the things wecare about and to stay close to the people who are important to us, no matter where they are.But for all the cool things that a person can do with a PC, there are lots of other ways we can put our creativity and i
19、ntelligence to work to improve our world. There are still far too many people in the world whose most basic needs go unmet. Every year, for example, millions of people die from diseases that are easy to prevent or treat in the developed world.I believe that my own good fortune brings with it a respo
20、nsibility to give back to the world. My wife, Melinda, and I have committed to improving health and education in a way that can help as many people as possible.As a father, I believe that the death of a child in Africa is no less poignant or tragic than the death of a child anywhere else. And that d
21、oesnt take much to make an immense difference in these childrens lives.Im still very optimist, and I believe that progress on even the worlds toughest problems is possibleand its happening every day. Were seeing new drugs for deadly diseases, new diagnostic tools, and new attention paid to the healt
22、h problems in the developing world.Im excited by the possibilities I see for medicine, for education and, of course, for technology. And I believe that through our natural inventiveness, creativity and willingness to solve tough problems, were going to make some amazing achievements in all these are
