8、assage 1Do you know that the “Happy Birthday to You” song is the first song sung in outer space?Apollo IX astronauts sang it on March 8, 1969. It is one of the most popular English songs of all time. Heres the story behind it.The song was written by two sisters from Kentucky, Mildred and Patty Smith

9、 Hill. It was first published under the title of “Good Morning to All” in 1893. Teachers sang it each day to welcome their students to the classroom.The composer, Mildred Hill, was a concert pianist. People are capable of hearing only certain parts of a whale song, so scientists use special audio equipment to

Pitch describes how high or low a sound is.Emmanuelle Leroy and a team of scientists now think they know why. Theyve studied more than a million songs from five groups of whales. La

It sheds light on why the pitch of whale songs has gotten lower: Whales arent singing as loudly as they used to.So why are whales singing more softly? Leroys study presents two hypotheses(假设). 19、here are more whales. Before the 1970s, commercial whale hunting brought whale populations near extinction. But starting in 1985, the International Whaling Commission banned commercial whaling. As the whale population has increased, whales have generally begun to live closer together. And if the wha

20、les are closer together, they dont have to sing as loudly to communicate.The studys second hypothesis is that the pitch of whale songs has dropped due to climate change.
