A.studiosus is one of them. Up to 50 individuals gather together to sp
2、in large collective webs, which catch larger prey than each spider could trap on its own.All the colony members look the same, but they dont all behave in the same way. The females can be aggressive or docile (温驯的). Its surprisingly easy to realize their personalitiesjust put two of them in a small
3、box overnight and check on them the next morning. If theyre both docile, they will have built a joint web in one corner of the box. If one of them is aggressive, the pair will be at opposite corners.Colin Wright from the University of Pittsburgh has now found that these personality types do differen
4、t jobs within the web, creating a natural division of labor. Theyre a little like ants, where small workers clean and look for food, and big soldiers guard and defend. But unlike these insects, the social spiders dont have castes (社会阶层) with different builds. Instead, their roles are definedby their
5、personalities. When Wrights team first started studying A.studiosus, they couldnt work out what the docile spiders did. They didnt seem to repair webs, keep enemies away, or catch prey. But when the researchers checked the fates of colonies in the wild, they found that those with a mix of docile and
6、 aggressive members were more likely to survive than those with just a single type. The docile members were clearly doing something important.It turns out that they act as the colonys babysitters. They spend most of their time standing watching over the eggs, or directly feeding the youngsters by re
7、gurgitating (反刍) foodjust like a mother bird might. Meanwhile, the aggressive spiders generally avoid these tasks; instead,they spend most of their time building the web, catching prey, and defending their colonies. Compared to the docile spiders, the aggressive ones are better at those tasks, becau
8、se the docile females rarely respond to enemiesand when they do respond, they do so slowly.For now, its not clear why the spiders naturally fall into their respective careers, or even what drives their different personalities in the first place. Titled “Raining Poetry”, this art program was a partnership between the nonprofit Mass Poetry and the city of Boston. The first poems were written to celebrate th
13、e start of National Poetry Month. Several more were added to the citys streets. Created using patterns and a water-proof spray (喷剂), the poems are invisible during dry, sunny weather, but appear like magic once raindrops start falling from the sky. “We want to bring poetry to the people,” Sara Siege
14、l, program director for the nonprofit Mass Poetry said. The poems were selected by Danielle Legros Georges, Bostons poet laureate. Georges selected the poems, which were distributed throughout the city, based on their relationship to Boston, as well as the general themes of water and rain. “I wanted
15、 to draw work from poets influential in Bostons literary, educational, or cultural areas,” Georges said in a statement. The poems were put on the streets by members of the Mayors Mural Crew. The Mural Crew uses a biodegradable spray and simple cardboard patterns. The poems can be put on the sidewalk
