4、incipalcomponentof natural gas. Althoughfarmingreleasesmoremethane(viabelchingruminants andupturnedland), the energy sector is moreconcentratedand thus easier tocorral. Drillers also have a biggerincentivethan farmers topreventleaks. After all, the gas that doesnt leak can be sold for a profit.【3】Cr
5、itics were quick todenouncethe deal asgreenwashing. Some argued that it would not lead to aphase-out of fossil fuels, something thatcampaignerswant to see agreed in Dubai. Thesescepticssuggest that amethanedeal could be seen as giving the oil-and-gas industry, which they want to kill off, a “get out
6、 ofjailfree” card. One green group complains that the deal isvoluntaryand worries that thepromisedcuts will not behonoured.【4】That is areasonableconcern, given the fossil-fuel industrysdismalrecord of climatedenialandregulatoryobstruction. Still, the dealrepresentsabreakthroughof sorts. Thecompanies
7、involvedaccount for some40% of global oil production, and include not just Western supermajors like ExxonMobil and Shell but also29national oilcompanies, among them Saudi Aramco, the mightiest of them all, and ADNoe of the UAE. The state giants, which are responsible for the majority of the industry
8、smethaneemissions, had longresistedjoiningany such agreement, or even acknowledging that theleaksexisted. Theirparticipationis therefore a big win.【5】The adopted target, to cutmethaneemissionsby an order ofmagnitude, to a mere0.2% or so of oil and gas production by the end of the decade, is both amb
9、itious andprecise. Progress will beindependentlyverifiedby thirdparties, including the UN Environment Programme.
