18、fter an exhausting climb up a spiral staircase,visitors to the Elizabeth Tower get a behind-the-scenes look at how the clock works.4Who or What Is Big Ben?The name Big Ben is often used to refer to the historic clock tower at Westminster Palace,or to refer to the giant clock itself.Big Ben was first
19、 used,however,to name the enormous bell behind the clock faces at the top of the tower.The bronze bell in London,England,weighs over 13 metric tons(14.3 t.),or roughly the weight of two African elephants.But how did a bell become an iconic landmark?In the 1830s,the British people were planning to re
20、build the Palace of Westminster.Among their plans to rebuild,the government decided that a new tower shouldnt have just any old clock.They wanted the clock to be accurate to within one second each day,and they also wanted a chiming bell.The bell was cast in East London on April 10,1858.Big Bens jour
21、ney through history had begun.The bell is 2.7 meters (9 ft.)wide and a little over 2.2 meters(7.2 ft.)tall.An average-sized person could fit inside it many times over.17The Elizabeth Tower,at the north end,is the most famous tower because it houses Big Ben.It stands 96.31 meters(316 ft.)tall and unt
22、il recently was simply known as the Clock Tower.It was renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012 to celebrate Queen Elizabeth IIs sixtieth anniversary as queen of England.The tower tilts to one side because of some digging that was carried out in a nearby street,but fortunately it isnt in danger of fallin
