Henry1 The cabby has his own special place from which he looks at life.2 His view of people is simpler, perhaps, than the view of a man who does any other kind of work.3 From the high seat of his cab, he looks down upon everybody.4 People are not important t
2、o him unless they wish to go somewhere.5 Then they are only something to be carried from one place to another.6 You may be a president or you may be no one, but to a cabby you are only a fare - only someone who rides in his cab for a price.7 You get into his cab, he shakes you a while, and he puts y
3、ou down.8 Then the time for payment has arrived. But on that face they saw an expression of love of life, and the queens wished that they could look the same.102 While she sat there, two hours passed.103 The kings and queens began to leave.104 Their cabs rolled away.105 The music ended.106 The waite
4、rs took everything off tables near hers.107 She was sitting there almost alone.108 Jerrys fare stood up and held out the numbered piece of paper.109 nIs someone going to give me something for this? she asked. 110 A waiter told her that it was for her cab.in He said that she should go to the door and
5、 give it to the man there.112 This man took it and called the number.113 Only three cabs stood in line now. The driver of one of them went and found Jerry asleep inside his cab.115 Jerry spoke a few words in anger, and then went up to his seat116 He turned the horse and the cab rolled to the door an
6、d stopped.117 His fare entered.118 The cab turned again, and went through the cool darkness of the park, following the street that would lead most quickly to the gate.119 At the gate, Jerry began suddenly to think.120 He was still half asleep, but there was a doubt in his mind.121 There were one or
7、two things he had to ask about.122 He stopped his horse, and his voice came down through the hole in the back of the cab.123 I want to see four dollars before we go any farther. Have you got the money? Four dollars! laughed the fare, softly. 11 No. Fve only got a few cents with me.”125 Jerry made th
8、e horse run. 126 The animaTs feet were very loud on the street.127 But above the noise of the horses feet, Jerrys voice could be heard.128 He was full of anger. 129 He shouted at the stars in the sky.130 He shouted at other cabs as they passed. 131 His words were so bad that another driver, hearing
9、them, could not believe his ears.132 But Jerry knew what he could do about this fare without money.133 He knew where he was going. 134 At the building with the green lights beside the door he pulled his horse to a stop. He opened the cab door and he jumped to the ground.136 Come on, you, he said, an
10、d his voice was hard.137 His fare came out with the dreaming smile still on her plain face.138 Jerry took her by the arm and led her inside. 139 He was going to tell the cops what had happened.140 They would do something about it.141 A gray-haired cop looked across the table. He and the cabby were n
11、o strangers.142 Jerry began, in his loud, hard voice, Tve got a fare here that- 143 Jerry stopped.144 He put his hand, reddened by the weather, to his face.145 The drink from McGarys Restaurant no longer clouded his mind so darkly.146 A fare, sir/1 he continued, with a wide smile, that I want you to

Its my wife that I married at old man Walshs this evening.148 And a wild time we had, its true.149 Shake hands with him, Norah, and well go home.1150 Before stepping into the cab again, Norah took a long deep breath.151 Ive had a very nice time, Jerry, said she said. If you pay him the lawful
13、 amount and no more, you can easily see what he thinks of you.10 He thinks you1 re less than nothing.ii If you discover suddenly that you have no money with you, you will wish you were dead.12 It is probably true that the cabbys view of life is formed by the shape of his cab.13 He sits up there on h
14、is seat, high as a god.14 The seat is small; no one shares it with him.15 While you are in his cabz your future is in his hands.16 You are helpless.17 The cab shakes you.18 You cant get out until he stops his horse.19 If you want to speak to him, you must talk through a little hole in the back of th
15、e cab.20 In a cab you no longer feel like a person. You may be someone very important22 But in a cab youre no more than something in a box, being carried from one place to another.23 One night there were sounds of pleasure and joy in the big house beside McGarys Family Restaurant.24 The sounds seeme
16、d to come from the rooms of the Walsh family.25 A crowd of interested neighbors stood outside the door.26 Again and again a waiter came bringing food or drink from the restaurant.27 The neighbors stood aside every time to let him pass.28 Then they would move near the door again.29 And all the time t
17、hey were talking about what was happening inside.30 Anyone who listened would have learned quickly and easily that Norah Walsh was being married. After some time had gone by, the happy people started coming out the door.32 They mixed at once with the neighbors who were standing there.33 Joyful cries
18、 and laughing voices rose in the night air.34 All this noise was born of the drinks from McGarys Restaurant.35 At the edge of the street stood Jerry ODonovarTs cab.36 No cleaner or more shining cab could be found.37 And Jerrys horse! I tell you he was fat with good food.38 Among the moving crowd Jer
19、rys high hat could now and then be seen.39 His nose, too, could be seen; it was thick and red, for it had been beaten by fares who wanted to fight.40 And also now and then, his fine green coat appeared.41 It was easy to see that Jerry had had more than enough to drink. Everyone had noticed it. Out o
20、f the crowd on the street or perhaps from among the people walking past the house, came a young woman.43 She stopped beside the cab. Jerry saw her there.44 A fare! He made a sudden move, and three or four people near him fell down.45 He himself - No! He caught himself in time and did not fall.46 Qui
21、ckly he went up to his seat.47 When he was there, he was safe.48 All of McGarys drink could not throw him down from there.49 Step in, lady, said Jerry.50 The young woman stepped into the cab.51 The door closed.52 The crowd in the street jumped away.53The horse started and the fine cab rolled down th

The horse went fast at first, but after a little time he went more slowly.55 Then Jerry called down through the hole in the back of the cab.56 He tried to make his voice soft; he wished to please.57 Where will you be going to?58 Any place you wish/1 was the answer. The voice was happy. It
23、sounded like music.59 Shes riding for pleasure/1 thought Jerry.60 And then he said: Take a trip in the park, lady. It will be cool and fine.1161 Just as you wish/1 answered the fare, pleasantly.62 The cab turned toward Fifth Avenue, then went north on that perfect street.63 Jerry was moved up and do
24、wn in his seat, and from one side to the other. McGarys drinks moved at the same time, and seemed to rise inside his head.65 He began to sing.66 Inside the cab the fare sat up straight on the seat67 She looked to the right and to the left at the lights and the houses.68 It was dark inside the cab, a
25、nd her eyes were shining like stars.69 When they came to Fifty-Ninth Street, Jerry was half asleep.70 But his horse went through the park gate.71 The horse knew where they were.72 The horse pulled the cab into the park every night.73 And the fare sat there, as if in a happy dream.74 She could smell
26、the clean fresh smell of green leaves and flowers.75 And the wise animal pulling the cab moved as usual. He was at home here.77 Jerry too tried to do as he did every night.78 His voice was thick, but he asked the questions that cabbies always ask in the park.79 You want to stop at the Casino Restaur
27、ant, lady? Have something to eat? Listen to the music? Everyone stops. 80 nI think that would be nice/1 said the fare.81 They made a sudden stop at the door of the restaurant.82 The cab door opened. The fare stepped out.83 At once she seemed caught by the wonderful music.84 The lights and the colors
28、 were bright, almost blinding.85 Someone put a piece of paper into her hand.86 On it was a number - 34. She looked around and saw her cab.87 It was 20 yards away, taking its place in a line with other waiting cabs.88 She was led inside, and soon she was seated at a table.She realized that she was ex
29、pected to buy something.90 She had a little money.91 She counted it and found enough to buy something cold and fresh to drink.92 There she sat, drinking slowly and looking at every- thing around her.93 Life here had new color, a new shape.94 It did not seem real.95 It was like a beautiful dream.96 At 50 tables sat people who looked to her like kings and queens.97 She thought their clothes and jewels were wonderfully rich.98 And now and then one of these people would look at her.99 They saw a small woman in a simple dress.100They saw a plain face.
