Henryi Soapy moved restlessly on his seat in Madison Square.2 There are certain signs to show that winter is coming.3 Birds begin to fly south.4 Women who want nice new warm coats become very kind to their husbands.5 And Soapy moves restlessly on his seat i
2、n the park.6 When you see these signs, you know that winter is near.7 A dead leaf fell at Soapys feet.8 That was a special sign for him that winter was coming.9 It was time for all who lived in Madison Square to prepare.10 Soapys mind now realized the fact.ii The time had come.12 He had to find some
3、 way to take care of himself during the cold weather. The young woman moved away a few steps.110 Soapy followed.in Standing beside her he said:112 Good evening, Bedelia! Dont you want to come and play with me?113 The cop was still looking. 114 The young woman had only to move her hand, and Soapy wou
4、ld be on his way to the place where he wanted to go.115 He was already thinking how warm he would be.116 The young woman turned to him.117 Putting out her hand, she took his arm.118 “Sure, Mike,11 she said joyfully, nif youll buy me something to drink.119 I would have spoken to you sooner, but the c
5、op waswatching. With the young woman holding his arm, Soapy walked past the cop.121 He was filled with sadness.122 He was still free.123 Was he going to remain free forever? 124 At the next corner he pulled his arm away, and ran.125 When he stopped, he was near several theaters. 126 In this part of
6、the city, streets are brighter and hearts are more joyful than in other parts.127 Women and men in rich, warm coats moved happily in the winter air.128 A sudden fear caught Soapy. 129 No cop was going to arrest him. 130 Then he came to another cop standing in front of a big theater.131 He thought of
7、 something else to try. He began to shout as if hed had too much to drink.133 His voice was as loud as he could make it.134 He danced, he cried out135 And the cop turned his back to Soapy, and said to a man standing near him,136 Its one of those college boys. He wont hurt anything. We had orders to
8、let them shout.11137 Soapy was quiet.138 Was no cop going to touch him?139 He began to think of the Island as if it were as far away as heaven.140 He pulled his thin coat around him.141 The wind was very cold.142 Then he saw a man in the shop buying a newspaper.143The mans umbrella stood beside the
9、door. Soapy stepped inside the shop, took the umbrella, and walked slowly away.The man followed him quickly.My umbrella, he said.Oh, is it? said Soapy.“Why dont you call a cop?I took it.Your umbrella!Why dont you call a cop?Theres one standing at the corner/1The man walked more slowly.Soapy did the
10、same.But he had a feeling that he was going to fail again.145146147148149150151152153154155156157The cop looked at the two men. nI - ” said the umbrella man - that is - you know how these things happen -1 - if thafs your umbrella Pm very sorry -1 -1 found it this morning in a restaurant - if you say
11、 its yours -1 hope youll -158 Its mine!11 cried Soapy with anger in his voice. 159 The umbrella man hurried away. 160 The cop helped a lady across the street. 161 Soapy walked east. 162 He threw the umbrella as far as he could throw it.163 He talked to himself about cops and what he thought of them.
12、164 Because he wished to be arrested, they seemed to believe he was like a king, who could do no wrong.165 At last Soapy came to one of the quiet streets on the east side of the city.166 He turned here and began to walk south toward Madison Square. He was going home, although home was only a seat in
13、 the park.168 But on a very quiet corner Soapy stopped.169 There was an old, old church.170 Through one of the colored-glass window came a soft light.171 Sweet music came to Soapys ears and seemed to hold him there.172 The moon was above, peaceful and bright173 There were few people passing.174 He c
14、ould hear birds high above him.175 And the anthem that came from the church held Soapy there, for he had known it well long ago.176 In those days his life contained such things as mothers and flowers and high hopes and friends and clean thoughts and clean clothes.177 Soapys mind was ready for someth
15、ing like this. He had come to the old church at the right time.179 There was a sudden and wonderful change in his soul.180 He saw with sick fear how he had fallen.181 He saw his worthless days, his wrong desires, his dead hopes, the lost power of his mind.182 And also in a moment his heart answered
16、this change in his soul.183 He would fight to change his life.184 He would pull himself up, out of the mud.185 He would make a man of himself again.186 There was time.187 He was young enough.188 He would find his old purpose in life, and follow it.189 That sweet music had changed him.190Tomorrow he
17、would find work.A man had once offered him a job.He would find that man tomorrow.He would be somebody in the world.He would-Soapy felt a hand on his arm.He looked quickly around into the broad face of a cop.HWhat are you doing hanging around here?11 asked the cop.Nothing, said Soapy.You think I beli
18、eve that?11 said the cop.Full of his new strength, Soapy began to argue.And it is not wise to argue with a New York cop.nCome along, said the cop.192 193194195 196197 198199200 201202Three months on the Island, said the Judge to Soapy the next morning. And therefore he moved restlessly on his seat.1
