The skilled operations that cause this to happen are the various acts that constitute the art of reading.【翻译】因此我们可以把阅读的艺术大致定义如下：阅读的艺术是一个过程，通 过这个过程，人的大脑只依靠自己对可以阅读的材料上的文字符号进行 操作，也不需要来自外部的帮助，通过自己的操作能力就能够提升自 己。人的大脑从懂得更少逐渐过渡到懂得更多。促使这件事情发生的技 术操作就构成了阅读艺术的各种行动。【

3、语法分析】第一句是一个主从复合句。主句是We can roughly define ,从句 是 what we mean by the art of reading ,作 define 的宾语。as follows作状语。这里的follows是一个名词，复数。冒号后面的the process是同位 语，作follows的同位语，具体解释follows的内容。在the process的后面跟的是一个定语从句，修饰process.定语从句 的主干是whereby a mind elevates itself（大脑通过这个过程提升了 自己）。whereby是一个连接副词，等于by this proc

4、ess.它把 定语从 句和先行词process联系在一起。注意，主语a mind和谓语动词elevates没有直接见面，而是被两个 with短语隔开了，并且用了逗号。这两个with短语在这里就是插入语。在第一个 with 短语 with nothing to operate on but the symbols of the readable matter 里，用了短语 nothing . but，意思是“仅仅， The readable matter意思是可以阅读的材料，即书、文章、杂志 等。短语nothing but昨天已经学过了意思是除了再也没有.， 仅仅。在nothing but这个短

5、语里，nothing是不定代词，but的意思相当 于介词except.nothing but与only的意思比较接近，但语气要比only强多了 ,用 它是为了强调but后面出现的那个词,加强语气。nothing but既可以连在一起，也可以在nothing后面跟上其 他词。但意思都是仅仅，除了再也没有”。nothing也可以根据情况替换成nobody、no one ,或者no places no time 等。例如：The little boy wanted nothing but the toy car.（小男孩除了 玩具汽车之外什么都不要/只要玩具汽车。）He has no one to

6、resort to but his wife at this critical moment/ 在 这个关键时刻，除了找他妻子，其他人他都指望不上/只能找妻子。）第二句是一个简单句，主谓状。第三句又是一个主从复合句。主干是主系表结构The skilled operations are the various acts.而主语和表语各自又跟了自己的定语从句。即that cause this to happen是定语从句，修饰operations.注意这 里的代词this又是昨天刚刚学过的后指现象，它指的是已经出现过 的那句话 The mind passes from understanding

7、less to understanding more （大脑从理解得更少到理解得更多,即理解力提 升了这件事情。）that constitute the art of reading也是一个定语从句，修饰先行词 acts.That is done in only one way. Without external help of any sort, you go to work on the book. With nothing but the power of your own mind, you operate on the symbols before you in such a way

10、 and have him explain the parts that trouble you.大家注意到了吗？在这两句里面出现了两个名词短语。第一句里面是 that,第二句里面是 external help.这两个单词或短语都指的上一段里已经提到的短语或句子。这种用一个词或短语指代前面出现的词、短语、句子、甚至段落 的语言现象叫做后指cataphora.后面出现的这个词与其前面的 词、句子等之间就形成了后指关系cataphoric relation.与后指关系相反的叫前指关系anaphoric relation.懂得这两种关系，并正确地找到它们在文章里分别指的是哪些词或句子, 对于我们正确

11、理解文章有很重要的意义。在第三句中，主句是in such a way之前的部分。从句是that引导的 结果状语从句。先看主句部分。With nothing but the power of your own mind 是 介词短语，作状语。其中nothing but意思是除了再没有了， 仅仅，相当于only，但比only的语气更强。before you也是一个介词短语，作定语，修饰symbols （你面前的文这个句子里用了一个句型so. that（做到了如此的程度，以至于结 果是）0one是代词，代替前面的a state.是为了避免重复而用的。one也是 后指词。第四句的主干是Such ele

12、vation is skilled reading主系表结构。在主语elevation的后面，出现了一个过去分词短语accomplished by the mind working on a book ,作定语,修饰 elevation.不过在这个 过去分子短语里，又出现了一个 现在分词短语,working on a book, 仍然作定语，修饰前面的mind.在表语skilled reading的后面,出现了一个同位语,the kind of reading.,进一步解释 skilled reading 的内容。最后的 that a book that challenges your understanding deserves 则是一个定语从句，修饰前面的reading.而在这个定语从句里，还出现了一个定语从句，就是that challenges your understanding，修饰前面的book.（挑战了你的理解力的书） 这样,去掉了定语从句之后这句话就是that a book deserves ,与前面 的the kind of reading 一起翻译，就是:一本书应该得到的那种阅读。 也就是说,book有它的定语从句,the kind of reading也有它的定语 从句。
